Mauritius is a dream destination for everyone, young and old. The island is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2400 kilometers off the South East Coast of Africa. This island nation has a pleasant tropical climatic condition and is known for the numerous tourist attractions. The average temperature is 27° centigrade during the day and rarely under 20° at night. The first Europeans to have visited Mauritius were the Portuguese at the beginning of the sixteenth century.  Modern infrastructure and transportation facilities have facilitated commuting to the numerous tourist attractions in Mauritius easier and convenient.  There is so much to see in Mauritius that you will never feel going back home.

Attractions in Mauritius: Tourists are mostly mistaken in thinking that Mauritius is just beaches and nothing else. There are various other tourist attractions in Mauritius.

Port Louis: Port Louis, the modern bustling capital city of Mauritius is the major tourist attraction. Port Louis, with its multi ethnic population has a tender nightlife in the form of bars, cinemas and casinos that keep the tourists entertained till the teensy hours of the morning. This harbor is located between mountains which make it worth watching.

Beaches: Mauritius has always been renowned for its emerald green beaches. Mauritius beaches, framed by the coconut palms and casuarinas trees, more commonly known as Filao trees are perfect for an idyllic vacation. Tourists have a whale of a time snorkeling, scuba diving, going on glass bottom boat cruises and indulging in various other water sport activities like kayaking and water skiing. Blue Bay is one of the popular long beach with white sand and crystal-clear ice blue water that is most suited for sailing, surfing and snorkeling. The Trou-aux-Biches is an ideal beach for youngsters, where tourists can sees the stunning coral reefs and exotic fishes. Pamplemonsses Garden: A beautiful botanical garden where you can find water lilies. It is said that Pamplemusses got its name from a citrus plant imported from the Dutch called Pamplemoucier.

Flacq Market: Flacq Market, the biggest open air market in Mauritius. It is located in the east part of the island in the one of the most important villages here, Flacq. A extremely colorful place where for sure you will find what you need.

The Water Park Leisure Village: The Water Park Leisure Village is an adventurous place on the east side of Mauritius which offers a number of water sports and other attractions to all groups of visitors. The park is spread out on an area of 25 acres and is specially designed to cater to all ages - young and old. The Water Park Leisure Village has excellent dining facilities which are equally attractive to the young and the old. Enjoy unforgettable moments sliding on the giant chutes, with family or friends.

Dutch Ruins: Dutch Ruins at Vieux Grand Port is the oldest settlements in Mauritius. Excavation work is underway in a bid to uncover an important part of Mauritian history.

The Domaine du Chasseur allows nature-lovers to wander its 30km of nature trails through the 1 000 hectares of natural landscape. Enjoy a walk to the trails, test your fitness on a mountain bike or pick up the pace on a quad bike to explore the pathways and waterfalls. You may be lucky to have a view of Javan deer, wild boars, monkeys, hares and many local bird species.

Souillac: A small seaside resort along the rugged coast in the Savanne district. A charming feature is the garden overlooking the sea, named after Dr. Charles Telfair. Batelage is the ancient port of Souillac. Even Rochester Falls is a waterfall on the Savanne River. It is famous for the strange rectangular form of its rocky flank.

Martello Towers

Martello Towers: This tower was previously used against military attacks. The Martello Towers could hold up to 40 soldiers, with equipment and stocks of food and water for several days. During the 19th century, the Martello Towers have been proclaimed and protected as a National Monument. This represents the scene of the ancient rivalry between old colonial powers and the ingenuity of mankind.

Chamarel: Chamarel is a village in southwest Mauritius, known for its two natural wonders. The magnificent Chamarel Falls and the colored earths of Chamarel. The different shades of blue, green, red and yellow of earth are apparently the result of the erosion of the volcanic ash. The neighboring waterfalls of Chamarel rise from the moors and the native plant life.

Black River Gorges: This is a 6,574 hectares national park created in 1994 for the protection of Mauritius' remaining native forests. You can enjoy magnificent landscapes, with endemic plants and rare bird species.

Ganga Talao: Ganga Talao or Grand Bassin is a lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, situated in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet above sea level. According to Hindu mythology it is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius.

These are some of the attraction that you must keep in your itenary. Apart from them there are loads of places around Mauritius you might love to discover in case you have some extra time.

Transport: The best and the cheapest way is to hire a taxi for a day. No risks, no rental contracts, no waiting for buses, no getting lost and also rather save. Bargaining is very important. Before you get into the cab ask for the price to your destination. Even Buses are fun and cheap way to get around Mauritius. It's not the fastest way to travel as the bus stops at every corner. Despite the extensive bus network on the island, it is fun to discover some parts of the island by scooter. They can be rented in many hotels and shops.

Winter is the best time to visit Mauritius as the temperature is much cooler and also it rains less. Don't forget to carry camera to capture incredible scenic beauty, umbrella to save you from unpredictable rain and a map to guide you in correct direction.
