The Relaxing Pamukkale situated in Turkey


Pamukkale is an unusual natural and historical site with the sparkling white castle -like cascades located in south-western Turkey in the Denizli Province. Pamukkale, means "cotton castle" in Turkish and is one of the most important highlights of Turkey, unique in the world.

The dazzling white calcareous castles are formed by limestone-laden thermal springs, creating the unbelievable formation of stalactites, potholes and cataracts. The marvelous landscape of Pamukkale has been created by this gradual formation, leaving a cotton-like image. Pamukkale is known as the 8th wonder of the world by Turkish people.

Interesting facts about Pamukkale:

  1. Waters in the terraces are the sediments of the springs with calcium bicarbonate in 33*C.
  2. The water contains large amounts of hydrogen carbonate and calcium, which merge to form calcium bi-carbonate.
  3. It is some 2,700 meters long and 160 meters high and can be seen from a great distance.
  4. Every second 250 liters of hot water arises from this spring, precipitating 2.20 grams of chalk per liter of water or 0.55 kilograms of chalk every second.
  5. The effect of this natural phenomenon has left thick white layers of limestone and travertine cascading down the mountain slope resembling a frozen waterfall.
  6. Located above the theatre of Hierapolis, the mineral water sources from the thermal springs of Cal Mountain.
  7. It is collected in a pool, known as the "Sacred Pool" of ancient times, where you can swim amidst the historical remains of Hierapolis.
  8. The Sacred Pool is now located inside Pamukkale Hotel.  

 Hierapolis - Pamukkale  The water of Pamukkale is famous for its benefits to the eyes and skin; and its curing properties to the ills of asthma, rheumatism, as well. History: Ancient Hierapolis appears to have been founded by King Eumenes II of Pergamon and its name is derived from Hiera, the wife of King Telephos, the legendary founder of Pergamon. The city became subject to Rome in 133 BC.

In 17 BC. during the reign of Tiberius it suffered a heavy earthquake that substantially destroyed the city, requiring it to be rebuilt. Preliminary excavations at Hierapolis were undertaken by a German team towards the end of the last century. Since 1957, excavation and restoration work has been going on under the direction of an Italian group of archaeologists from the University of Lecce sponsored by Fiat.

Apart form the hot spring of Pamukkale which are renowned for their role in healing lots of diseases, you can visit Aphrodisias: Once the capital of the province of Lydia, the site features well-preserved city walls, the temple of Aphrodite, the theatre, and the stadium.
