    Although Labor Day Weekend may symbolize the end of summer for many of us in the United States, don’t let it get you down! There’s no shortage of awesome events and festivals to enjoy this coming weekend. Whether traveling with friends, your sweetheart, or the entire family (kids in tow), there are sure to be plenty of Labor Day events perfect for your group.

    As many of us will head to the beaches this weekend, I took a special look at the many nude beaches in the United States a couple of days ago in case you’d like to have an exciting (and naked) good time for Labor Day. Skinny dipping may not be a viable option, however, if you’re traveling with your children or (shudder) the in-laws. My mother-in-law naked… not something that screams “relaxing and fun holiday” to me.

    Beyond the beaches, backyard barbeques and sales, here are a few other options for your Labor Day travel in the Midwest:

    Chicago, Illinois
    Chicago’s annual Jazz Fest starts today, August 30th and runs until September 2nd. Admission is free. Events take place at the Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park, and Grant Park. For Labor Day sales, Chicago is a world-renowned shopping destination.

    Detroit, Michigan
    In downtown Royal Oak, the Arts, Beats and Eats Festival takes place August 31, 2012 until September 3, 2012. This year’s musical guests include REO Speedwagon, The Guess Who, and Travis Tritt. Detroit Jazz Fest is also going on downtown this weekend and the annual Michigan Renaissance Festival (Ren Fest) is happening in Holly.

    St. Louis, Missouri
    For a chicken wing eating content, check out the Midwest Wingfest in Fairview Heights this weekend. At Laclede’s Landing, enjoy some great music and food at the Big Muddy Blues Festival. Other Labor Day events in St. Louis include the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden, the St. Nicolas Greek Fest at the St. Nicholas Church, and Veterans Festival at Forest Park.

    Columbus, Ohio
    This year is the 30th Annual Labor Day Weekend Powwow at Newark Earthworks. The Powwow features Native American music, arts, dancing, food, and crafts. At Bicentennial Park and the Scioto Mile, check out Rhythm on the River on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 8pm. Admission is free and the event features an evening of dance from BalletMet Columbus.

    Omaha, Nebraska
    Omaha’s famous Septemberfest kicks off today, August 30, 2012 and runs until September third. Admission is $4 for adults and free for children under 5. The event offers live music, Muay Thai kickboxing, a parade, a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, and the BBQ and Ribeye Steak Cookoff. Balloon artists and magicians will also be on site for children young and old.

    Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota
    Head to the Twin Cities to catch the last days of the Minnesota State Fair for fireworks and fun for the whole family. The Minnesota Renaissance Festival offers an escape from modern life this weekend and continues each weekend in September. For something a bit out of the ordinary, check out the Shafer Corn Maze. It opens on Labor Day – Monday, September 3, 2012 and lasts until Halloween.
