For folks in the United States, budget friendly travel is the name of the game this summer, and Chicago is one of many great budget conscious travel destinations.
From the far northwest side of Chicago with the Polish neighborhoods and historic homes around O’Hare International Airport to Downtown with its world class shopping and skyscrapers; all the way down to the far southwest side with Irish pubs, a haunted castle, and galleries, Chicago has something for everyone.
Chicago is the hub of the Midwestern United States and it boasts beautiful views of Lake Michigan as well as sandy beaches, art and science museums, and Shedd Aquarium with its vast marine life.
Transportation in Chicago
Chicago is one of the easiest large cities to navigate on foot, with the majority of streets forming a grid system. It is, however, a very large area to navigate on foot. Public transportation is generally cheap, efficient, and safe for tourists.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates buses and trains in the city and some suburbs. The majority of trains run on elevated tracks rather than an underground system, and locals refer to the trains as the “L.”
The Metra offers commuter trains to suburbs and surrounding areas. It runs from South Bend, Indiana to Chicago and then to Kenosha, Wisconsin. If you live in the Midwest, trains into Chicago may be a more interesting trip than flying into the Windy City.
Don’t Miss - Baseball
If heading to Chicago this summer, be sure to check out a baseball game. Both the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox play home games between April and October each year.
