With proper precautions and a lot of common sense, most countries around the globe can be considered safe travel destinations for women. Even so, there are some countries and areas of the world which are a bit safer for women travelers - even if traveling alone.
- Northern Europe - Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark are clean and typically very travel friendly for women. Major signs and information are provided in English as well as the local language.
- Australia and New Zealand - Generally safe throughout with all signage in English, however, (as with any country), there are a few specific neighborhoods which may not be recommended to solo female travelers.
- Canada and the United States - As above, there are specific neighborhoods in larger cities that it's probably best to avoid but the vast majority of destinations here are safe. The police force is typically very helpful, reliable, and trustworthy here, so should you encounter any issues, do not hesitate to contact them for assistance.
- Southeast Asia - Some people may find this last grouping surprising however women travelers, whether solo or in a group are generally very safe in most SE Asian countries including Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines. It's important when traveling to any Asian country that you learn a bit about local customs and women's place in society before traveling so that you are able to be polite.
Wherever and whenever you travel, do your due diligence and research the country beforehand. Also take the time to check into visa requirements, costs, and processing times. For US citizens, as well as citizens of many other countries, most locations offer Visa on Arrival. Keep in mind that often a visa on Arrival is valid for 30 days. If your travel plans are longer than 30 days, you may be able to get a longer visa from that country's embassy before you travel.
