Buenos Aires - Heaven of Argentina
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Jun-2009

Buenos Aires is an unforgettable city. This is the capital and largest city of Argentina. Buenos Aires was built by Europeans; this vibrant city overflows with energy and brims with attractive residents called portenos. They value their European heritage highly, Italian and German names outnumber Spanish, and the lifestyle and architecture are markedly more European than any other in South America.

Buenos_Aires

Buenos Aires is composed of many small places, intimate details, and tiny events and interactions, each with a slightly different shade, shape, and character. The national dance, the tango, is perhaps the best expression of that spirit--practiced in dance halls, parks, open plazas, and ballrooms. Buenos Aires' climate is generally pleasant, with an annual rainfall of 900mm spread evenly throughout the year. In terms of weather, spring (September to November) and fall (March to May) are the best seasons to visit Buenos Aires. Spanish is the official language, but English is understood in the tourist areas.

The Story of Pizza
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 21-May-2009

Today everyone loves pizza with lots of cheese and different toppings. It's so yummy! But have you ever thought about the origin of Pizza and how it became so famous. Let's discover some of the interesting facts and history about pizza.

pizzaOrigin of Pizza: Pizza was originally founded by the early Greeks who first baked large, round and flat breads. Eventually the idea of flat bread became famous in Italy where, in the 18th century, the flat breads called Pizzas were sold on the streets and in the markets. At that time Pizza had no toppings and it was enjoyed naturally.

Introduction of toppings: In about 1889, Queen Margherita, accompanied by her husband, Umberto I, took an inspection tour of her Italian Kingdom. During her travels The Queen tasted and loved the bread and would eat it every time she was out amongst the people. Summoning Chef Rafaelle Esposito from his pizzeria to the royal palace, the queen ordered him to bake a selection of pizzas for her pleasure. To honor the queen who was so beloved by her subjects, Rafaelle decided to make a very special pizza just for her. He baked a Pizza topped with tomatoes, Mozarella Cheese, and fresh Basil (to represent the colors of the Italian flag: Red, white, and green).

Ganges - religious icon of India
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 05-May-2009

Ganges is one of the major rivers of the Indian subcontinent, flowing east through the Gangetic Plain of northern India into Bangladesh. The 2,510 km (1,560 mi) river rises in the western Himalayas in the Uttarakhand state of India, and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. Ganges is considered as a holy river by Indians and worshipped as the goddess Ganga. It is believed that bathing in the river Ganga causes the remission of sins and facilitates the attainment of salvation or nirvana.

Ganges

This deep-rooted truth is proved by the fact that people travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga at Varanasi or other places located on the banks of this holy river. Some of these sacred places, located on the Ganga, are Varanasi, Haridwar and Prayag (Allahabad). As soon as the day begins, devout Hindus begin to give their offerings of flowers or food, throwing hand full of grain or garlands of marigolds or pink lotuses into the Ganges.

Bahamas - Land of islands
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Apr-2009

The moment your toes touch sand and your gaze meets the water, you know you're in The Islands of The Bahamas. The Bahamas is an independent, sovereign, consisting of two thousand cays and seven hundred islands. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of the United States. The islands are actually the birthplace of the Gulf Stream, a phenomenon that also accounts for their astonishing variety and abundance of marine life. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism offers a People-to-People programme; an opportunity for visitors to experience a genuine and informal taste of Bahamian hospitality and culture.

bahamas

Climate: The Bahamas enjoy around 320 sunny days a year; and daytime temperatures during winter (December to April) average 70ºF (21ºC) and a perfect 80ºF (26ºC) in summer. In general, the islands are balmy year-round, with cooling, near-constant trade winds blowing by day from the east. The so-called rainy season extends from late May to November. The high season typically runs from mid-December to mid-April, when hotel prices are highest.

Easter and its significance
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Apr-2009

Easter is the sacred celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead. Easter recalls the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a joyous festival that coincides with the arrival of the spring season. The date of Easter varies from March 22 to April 25. Protestants and Roman Catholics observe Easter on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, the full moon following the vernal equinox. The English name "Easter" according to the Venerable Bede, comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Eostre", the goddess of fertility and birth. Easter abounds with symbolism. The rabbit, bunny, lamb, cross, lighted candles, eggs and chicks, are all seen as having importance in the celebration of Easter.

Happy_Easter

Importance of "The Great Fifty Days": The Great Fifty Days begins with Easter Sunday and concludes on the Day of Pentecost. (The word Pentecost actually comes from the Greek word for fifty.) During these fifty days several customs are often observed that assist in highlighting the festivity of the season.

significance of easter

  • The paschal candle is moved from its normal place near the baptismal font to a prominent place near the altar.
  • The liturgical color of white is used during the entire fifty days-longer than at any other time of the church year.
  • The "Alleluia," which is omitted during the penitential season of Lent, is restored to the liturgy as the premier expression of joy celebrating Jesus' resurrection.

The seven weeks that span the time between Jesus' resurrection and the sending of the Spirit are sometimes even called a "week of weeks."

Elephant Tusk, what are they used for?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 07-Apr-2009

A tusk is an elongated tooth on each side of the upper jaw of the elephant.  Tusks are essentially no different from other teeth. Tusks are valued for their ivory. One of the key differences between African and Asian elephants is the tusks. All African elephants, male and female (before doing this post l only thought it was only males) have tusks whereas only some Asian males have tusks.

african elephant

About 50% of Asian females have short tusks known as tushes. Unlike proper tusks tushes have no pulp inside. What are tusk used for? Elephants use their tusks as weapons against potential predators like the tiger or in battle against other elephants to show their dominancy. They are also used to aid foraging, digging, stripping bark and moving things out of the way. Have you ever seen on TV an elephant at work?  it is really spectacular.

Protection of animals and wildlife
Pump it0 Dump it1      Posted on: 13-Mar-2009

Wildlife includes all non-domesticated plants, animals, and other organisms. Domesticating wild plant and animal species for human benefit has occurred many times all over the planet, and has a major impact on the environment, both positive and negative. But unfortunately today wildlife faces threats from habitat destruction, pollution and other human actions, such as global warming.

wildlife

Threats to wildlife:

  • Habitat Loss: Due to growing population, cities are expanding into the countryside, and as a result fewer natural wildlife habitat areas are left each year. Some wildlife species, such as deer, rabbits and chipmunks, are adaptable to many conditions, but other creatures have very specific plant, moisture and temperature requirements. These are the endangered species which we risk losing if we don't preserve adequate amounts of habitat for their survival.

Koo-Koo clocks - Interesting facts
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 10-Mar-2009

A koo-koo clock is a simple device. It is a clock made of wood and when the time is just right, a koo-koo bird pops out and, as the song says, goes koo koo. Why has the traditional Koo-Koo clock is still famous when science has given us so many modified form of clock, starting from digital clock to satellite-powered wristwatches? Let's peep into the history, revealing the charm.

clock

History: The first cuckoo clocks made in the Black Forest - wooded mountain range in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany. In 1629, many decades before clock making was established in the Black Forest, an Augsburg nobleman by the name of Philipp Hainhofer (1578-1647) penned the first known description of a cuckoo clock. The actual inventor of the pendulum-driven cuckoo clock, however, is greatly debated by clock-making scholars and no definitive answer seems to have been agreed upon.

The Great Barrier Reef - A real beauty...
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 15-Jan-2009

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world, roughly parallel to the coast of Queensland, Australia, for almost 2,000km. This is the only living organic collective visible from Earth's orbit! The Great Barrier Reef is one of the wonders of the natural world - it is the world's largest coral reef ecosystem. It was declared a World Heritage area in 1981 and added to the National Heritage List in 2007. The reef is scattered with beautiful islands and idyllic coral cays and covers more than 300,000 square kilometers. The major attraction is Coral. Corals found in the Great Barrier Reef contain algae and the relationship between the algae produce oxygen and help the coral to remove wastes. When this relationship breaks down, the coral suffers and becomes bleached.

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, and it was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). The Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles) from east to west of China. Solar power - A great free source of energy
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Jan-2009

Solar power is energy which comes from the sun. This energy is very powerful and hits the earth regardless of whether or not we take advantage of it. In fact, the sunlight that shines on the Earth in just one hour could meet world energy demand for an entire year! And just incase you get that question when you are playing Trivial Pursuit "Solar" is the Latin word for "sun." We can use solar power in two different ways: as a heat source, and as an energy source.

 solar energy  sun

Uses of Solar power.

  • Solar Cells: In a sunny climate, you can get enough power to run a 100W light bulb from just one square meter of solar panel. Also known as photoelectric or photovoltaic cells, these are the most common devices that turn sunlight into electricity. Solar cells are combined into modules of which solar panels are comprised.
  • Solar water heating: Heat from the Sun is used to heat water in glass panels on your roof. Solar water heating is easily worthwhile in places like California and Australia, where you get lots of sunshine. Mind you, as technology improves it's becoming worthwhile in the UK, where the sun does not come out as much.

Christmas - festival of light and love
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 24-Dec-2008

Christmas is a time for joy, for giving and sharing, for laughter, for coming together with family and friends, for tinsel and brightly decorated packages. But mostly, Christmas is for love. It was this love for which Jesus came to this world and sacrificed his life.

christmas

Thus Christmas is a celebration of love and mirth symbolized by the Nativity, the Santa, the caribou, the poinsettia and the evergreens. All that brings home the spirit of love, life and laughter. And this is the spirit that makes Christmas so popular throughout the world. Christmas is thought by most to be a wonderful time, focusing the participants on giving, family togetherness, beautiful music and decorations, feasting on special foods and singing.

Prior to 1880 Santa was not dressed in red he evolved into  the image we know today after being introduction by Coca Cola during the 1930s. The Story of Father Christmas: Father Christmas was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, normally dressed in green, a sign of the returning spring. He was known as 'Sir Christmas', 'Old Father Christmas' or Old Winter'. In this earliest form, Father Christmas was not the bringer of gifts for small children, nor did he come down the chimney. He simply wandered around from home to home, knocking on doors and feasting with families before moving on to the next house.

Singapore - A Dream Destination
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 08-Dec-2008

Singapore's strategic location at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula has ensured its importance, which is greater than its size might seem to justify. Singapore consists of the island of Singapore and some 63 islets within its territorial waters. Many of the city's attractions are clustered closely together. Singapore was separated from the rest of Malaysia on 9 August 1965, and became a sovereign, democratic and independent nation. Singapore is generally hot and humid. It's warm and humid year round, with the temperature almost never dropping below 20°C (68°F), even at night, and usually climbing to 30°C (86°F) during the day. For those who enjoy the sun and the beach, Singapore is an ideal place for everyone. Once you go there, you will keep coming back, we do!

singapore

History: Singapore, an island-state in Southeast Asia, was founded as a British trading colony in 1819 which joined Malaysia in 1963, but withdrew two years later and became independent.Singapore_map Now it is one of the world's most prosperous countries, with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. Singapore's strategic location combined with a largely corruption-free government, skilled work force, pro-foreign investment and export-oriented led to a successful free-market economy which attracts international investment funds on a large scale despite its relatively high-cost operating environment.
