  • Create a routine of playing, study, eating etc and pass the information to your child. So in case you are not around, your child does all his important tasks in time.  Speak to your child and explain the things, they will take it positively.
  • If you have hired nanny, arrange for a written contact with her regarding what is expected out of her and what is not. You can set clear guidelines for handling your child and make them exactly the way you want your child to be reared.
  • Make a visit to your child's school, try to be friendly with all his friends and see whether your child is in good company or not because he is spending more time with them than you. Speak to teachers if required to understand the performance of your child.

How to handle Twins
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 08-Sep-2009

Are you a parent of twins or about to become? Feeling overwhelmed with receiving double happiness in one go! True however becoming a mother means so much responsibilities and commitments, especially when it's twins everything doubles, yes even the fun. It's a challenge to be the parents of twins. Looking after twins can be very stressful to mothers however small tips can really change your life. As parents you need to involve yourself in proper time management so that your challenges and responsibilities do not overshadow a lifetime experience of love and happiness.

twins

Tips to handle twins:

  • Nursing twins: Most important thing and even a problem that arises with twins is nursing. How to feed the two babies at the same time? Just have patience and few supportive friends. Purchase a twin nursing pillow which is thicker, sturdier and can concurrently hold two babies and bring them up to your breasts don't try to bend towards them. Continuously switch sides to avoid getting blocked ducts and not getting all the milk drained from your breast, as babies feed in different styles.
  • Most it's mother's duty to look after babies. But when its twins both the partners should distribute the work and help each other to give equal attention to both the babies. However don't always stick to one particular baby, exchange your duties so that both parents get chance to be with both of the twins.

Talk to Your Child about HIV/AIDS
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Aug-2009

Raising a child is the most gratifying as well toughest job. It's the duty of responsible parents to create the awareness of all social issues among children. There are lots of complex matters all around that are difficult for children to understand and for adults to explain. Educating children about sex, HIV/AIDS is very important so that they don't get any erroneous information from wrong sources. Also look through our other AIDS article.

Here are some tips on how to start the discussion:

  • Before initiating the conversation think about the information you want to discuss with your child keeping into consideration child's age, prior knowledge and influences, as well as your own religious and cultural values. Child psychologists think that the sooner you talk about it to your child the better.

aids

  • Assemble all important and correct information about HIV/AIDS from doctors, friends and informative websites, so that you can convey accurate and correct information to your child.
  • To initiate you can use the terms like: "Have you heard about AIDS before? Well, what do you think AIDS is?" This way, you can discover what she/he already understands and work from there.
  • Be honest and frank with your child. If you are uncomfortable, they are too while discussing such topics. Share your feelings and make them comfortable so that they can easily say their doubts with you. Children's misconceptions about AIDS can be pretty scary, so it's important to correct them as soon as possible.
  • Exchange your ideas and make the conversation friendly don't make it like a lecture otherwise your child will not take any interest. Listen to what they have to say and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Discuss peer pressure, and encourage your child to use his or her own judgment when making critical decisions. Even if you don't agree with your child don't pass any judgment
  • Provide them with educational material or web sites where they can learn in private. Then discuss their experiences later.

Motivate your child to clean their room
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Aug-2009

As responsible parents it's our duty to make our child responsible and discipline. A sense of cleanliness should be developed among children from the very childhood and one of the first steps could be motivating them to keep their room clean. Normally your child will never find interest in cleaning their room so you need to follow some simple rules to encourage them.

Motivate your child to clean their room.

Teaching your child to keep a clean room:

  • Make a fixed place for all the materials of your child's room and label them, like label a cabinet as "Toys" and place all the toys over there, explain this to your child that after playing they should keep back all the toys in its designated place.
  • Always remember child do whatever they see so you need to set an example of cleanliness by keeping the house in good order. Get the whole family involved in the cleaning process. Enjoy the time with music so that your child can take this as a part of life not as a tough work.
  • Appreciation and simple reward can really make the difference.
  • Make the cleaning process more challenging by setting a timer, turning on some lively music. Let him know that when he finishes, he can go outside and play.
  • Make a routine. Give a list of work he needs to do for the day. Encourage him to look at the list upon awakening to see what needs to be done for that day. This is a good way to help your child set goals and become more responsible.
  • Your child can't be perfect like you so don't criticize or say anything negative. Always try to appreciate.

Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 05-Aug-2009

Most of the toddlers are in the habit of sucking their fingers and thumb. As a parent you must be worried about this practice, but don't worry it's very common among children and by following some simple tips you can help your children to get rid of this habit. They suck on their fingers, clothing, and toys. From this action they learn what is pleasing and what is uncomfortable. You will find your children sucking their thumbs especially when they are tired.

Encourage your toddler to stop thumb sucking

Steps to help your child to avoid thumb sucking:

  • Don't criticize your child or never talk about your disappointment on his habit in front of him, if you do so it can irritate him and as a result he will increase thumb sucking.
  • Majorly child sucks thumb or fingers when they are bored or he has nothing to do. So try to engage him with some new toys or anything interesting that your child enjoys so that he can forget about the habit and concentrate on the activity.
  • Always keep your child happy. A happy child will never take stress which can be the reason of thumb sucking. During the phase when you are trying to free your child from this habit don't do anything which they dislike or don't want to practice.
  • Children are very fluctuating in nature. They will never listen to you during the state of stress or irritation so always select the time when they are in happy mood so that they can cooperate with you to their fullest.

Cough and Kids
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Jun-2009

Are you also worried about the cold and cough your child is suffering from? Coughing is a very common symptom in children and usually accompanies an infection with the common cold virus. Cough can be of many types, whooping cough, dry cough, chesty cough, cough with vomiting or barky cough. However you need to understand the cause of your child's cough in order provide appropriate help and treatment.

coughHow to understand the type of cough:

  1. When your child is coughing long or cannot draw breath, possibly its whooping cough, which is caused by bacteria not virus.
  2. If your child is feeling like a tickle in the back of the throat, that symbolizes dry cough that is not in itself dangerous, but a natural and normal reaction to secretions in the respiratory tract.
  3. If there is wheezing while inhaling possibly its barky cough which is commonly brought on by a viral upper respiratory infection, or in some cases allergies.
  4. Chesty cough is due to virus can get very loud and worrisome, but they don't always signal a major infection. If your child is still eating, has energy and can sleep at night, they'll likely kick the cough in 7 to 10 days.
  5. If your child or baby has a cough, and throws up after coughing, it doesn't necessarily mean they have a more serious infection. If your child coughs violently for over 2 weeks with vomiting, can't stop coughing and can't breathe, they may have whooping cough.

That's when single moms must take the initiative and search for the answers. It's often helpful to try tips and suggestions offered by other single moms. But with time myths are breaking. Some of the most famous celebrities raised by single moms are Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, Tom Cruise and Les Brown.

Get your kids to exercise
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 06-Apr-2009

In the era of Internet, television and video games, it's really difficult to convince kids do exercise. Nowadays children have so many fun and interesting things to do indoors, that they are hardly ready to go out and workout. Exercise is extremely important as a child grows into an adult. The less exercise your child experiences, the less likely they will exercise when they get older. By following some tips you can motivate your children and get them moving!

kids and exercise
  • You need to set the rules in advance. Make a deal with them: for every half hour they surf the web or watch TV, they have to do half an hour of something physical. Physical doesn't have to be exercise per se. Your child can add physical activity throughout the day in a number of ways.

Growth Hormone Deficiency Explained
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 06-Feb-2009

Kids and teens grow and go through puberty at different times. For girls, puberty usually begins between ages 8 and 13. For guys it often begins a bit later - between 10 and 15. You must have observed some teens develop a lot earlier, whereas others develop much later than other people of the same age. There's a medical reason why some people grow more slowly than usual.

Reasons of slow growth:

  • Genetic Reason: If you're short, you may just have familial (genetic) short stature. Like short parents tend to have short children.

Growth Hormone Deficiency
  • Lack of Nutrition: Not getting adequate amounts of protein, calories, and other nutrients in your diet can also cause growth to slow, as well as a number of other chronic medical conditions such as kidney, heart, lung, and intestinal diseases.

Help your baby to talk, it's music to your ears
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Jan-2009

Listening the first word from your baby is a great feeling. Isn't it and when the word is "mama"? Your joy knows no bound, but l must say the first word my son said was "daddy"! Generally babies utter their first words at 11 to 14 months, when the tongue and lips gain dexterity and the brain starts to match up objects with names. Every child learns to speak with time but you as a parent can help them to talk from birth onwards. Critical milestones for a baby learning to talk happen in the first three years of life.

baby talking
  • Baby talk at 3 months: By the end of three months, babies begin "cooing" -- a happy, gentle, repetitive, sing-song vocalization. At three months, your baby listens to your voice, watches your face as you talk, and turns toward other voices and sounds.
  • Baby talk at 6 months: At six months, your baby begins babbling with different sounds, "ba-ba" or "da-da." By the end of the sixth or seventh month, babies respond to their own names, recognize their native language.

Helping to develop social skills in toddlers
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Jan-2009

Toddler develop great social skills through the interaction they have with people around them. Different activities help to develop mental, physical, social and emotional skills to stimulate your children's imagination and creativity. As a parent you should involve your child in such activities through which your toddler can understand and learn the world around him.

sharing

Some of the activities that can enhance your toddler's social skills are mentioned here:

  • Importance of Money: Give your child different coins and ask them to count them. Teach your child how to use the money and about money which will enable them to understand the value of it.
  • Indulge them in cooking: Accompany your child in mixing, baking, measuring the ingredients. These are the tasks your kid will enjoy doing and it goes not matter if they make a mess
  • Cleaning work through game: This will give them the sense of responsibility and will be hygienic from the very beginning of their life and they will do it as part of the "norm".
  • Encouraging Play with Others: Always involve and encourage your child to play in a group. This will inculcate the team skills in your child. They will watch and often copy what they see others do, even though they're not yet able to play with them. I am sure untill now your toddler thinks everything is MINE, but they need to learn the skill of sharing. As they grow and become more experienced at play, they'll learn to play with other children. This is called "cooperative" play, and usually happens after the age of 3. In cooperative play, children learn to work and solve problems together, and develop their social skills.

Teenage pregnancy, yes it can happen!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 26-Jan-2009

Teen Pregnancy refers to pregnancy in women/girls who are aged 19 and under. In the past, it was generally assumed that most teen pregnancies resulted from inadequate sex education, lack of access to contraception and sexual health services. But now it is revealed that teen pregnancy is not a simple social problem that can be fixed with appropriate educational and health messages, and that a more comprehensive approach is required. Although it is an extremely difficult situation for a teen to deal with a teenage pregnancy, current statistics reveal that approximately 10% of girls 19 and under do get pregnant.

pregnant teen

Problems of teen pregnancy.

  • Possible health risks to the pregnant teen and her growing baby
  • The ability of the teen parent to care for and support her child
  • The effect that pregnancy/parenting at a young age can have on the teen's life plan
  • The social costs of supporting young mothers and their children

To avoid teen pregnancy, every girl should take some precautions, it may sound simple but here it is explained in simple language for you to understand

  1. Make a proactive decision about whether or not you are going to engage in sexual intercourse. "It should never be something that is done to you," states Blum, who specializes in adolescent medicine.
  2. If sexual intercourse is something you choose to do, then protect yourself against the major health risks such as HIV/AIDS, STDs and pregnancy.
  3. Never assume that by "knowing" your partner that he or she is not infected. "You're likely to be wrong," Blum says, from drdonicca.com
  4. Contraception used sometimes - works sometimes. "If you are going to engage in sexual intercourse, you need to use contraception always," Blum recommends.

Nappy Rash - uncomfortable for your little one
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 14-Jan-2009

Nappy rash is very common - most babies will get it at some point. It is not usually a 'disease', but just an irritation of the skin. It is usually caused when your baby's skin comes into contact with urine and faeces that collects in their nappy. Leaving a wet nappy on a baby for long periods of time can make the rash worse.

happy baby

Symptoms of nappy rash:

  • Inflamed skin - the skin around the genital area and anus looks red and moist.
  • Blistering - the skin may blister, then peel, leaving raw patches (ulcers).
  • Spreading - the rash can spread onto the tummy and buttocks.
  • Ulcers - small ulcers can sometimes form on healthy skin near the area of the rash.

Prepare your child for the first day at school
Pump it1 Dump it2      Posted on: 03-Jan-2009

The first day of your child at school is one of the greatest turns in their life. For the first time they step into the world when you are not with him/her to take care of everything, it's the beginning of their independent life. Your child gets surrounded by lots of queries, confusions and may be fearful of the change from the small, loving and comfortable preschool situation. At this point as a parent you need to prepare your child to face the strange world alone. Let's learn some tips that you can follow to make the first day of school the best day of your child.

prepare your child

  • Kids need a good night's sleep before the first day of school. About two weeks before school starts, start gradually moving bedtime and wake-up call earlier, to get the kids used to a new earlier schedule.
  • At least a day before school starts, help your child pack his backpack with his supplies, putting his name on everything and sharpening his pencils.
  • If your child is starting school at a new, unfamiliar building, or is beginning a new phase, the best way to ease his anxiety is to equip him with as much information as you can. Ask your school administrators if you and your child can tour the building sometime before the school starts.
  • In the weeks before school begins, discuss kindergarten with your child. Express enthusiasm and excitement at all she is going to learn. Try to evoke responses from your child to see how she may be feeling.

Sexual Abuse: It is never right
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 28-Dec-2008

Sexual abuse is any form of non-consensual physical contact. It includes rape, molestation, or any sexual conduct with a person who lacks the mental capacity to exercise consent. Until the 1970s the occurrence of sexual abuse had been gravely underestimated.

sexual Abuse Growing awareness of the problem led legislatures to enact reporting requirements, which mandate that any professional person (doctor, nurse, teacher, social worker) who knows or has reason to believe that a child is being abused report this information to the local welfare agency or law enforcement department. Statistics vary widely about the level of sexual abuse, but most researchers agree that it occurs at a higher rate than previously believed. Experts on the subject estimate that more than 130,000 children a year are sexually abused in the United States alone.
