Helping to develop social skills in toddlers
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Jan-2009

Toddler develop great social skills through the interaction they have with people around them. Different activities help to develop mental, physical, social and emotional skills to stimulate your children's imagination and creativity. As a parent you should involve your child in such activities through which your toddler can understand and learn the world around him.

sharing

Some of the activities that can enhance your toddler's social skills are mentioned here:

  • Importance of Money: Give your child different coins and ask them to count them. Teach your child how to use the money and about money which will enable them to understand the value of it.
  • Indulge them in cooking: Accompany your child in mixing, baking, measuring the ingredients. These are the tasks your kid will enjoy doing and it goes not matter if they make a mess
  • Cleaning work through game: This will give them the sense of responsibility and will be hygienic from the very beginning of their life and they will do it as part of the "norm".
  • Encouraging Play with Others: Always involve and encourage your child to play in a group. This will inculcate the team skills in your child. They will watch and often copy what they see others do, even though they're not yet able to play with them. I am sure untill now your toddler thinks everything is MINE, but they need to learn the skill of sharing. As they grow and become more experienced at play, they'll learn to play with other children. This is called "cooperative" play, and usually happens after the age of 3. In cooperative play, children learn to work and solve problems together, and develop their social skills.

Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 14-Jan-2009

Nappy rash is very common - most babies will get it at some point. It is not usually a 'disease', but just an irritation of the skin. It is usually caused when your baby's skin comes into contact with urine and faeces that collects in their nappy. Leaving a wet nappy on a baby for long periods of time can make the rash worse.

Symptoms of nappy rash:

  • Blistering - the skin may blister, then peel, leaving raw patches (ulcers).
  • Spreading - the rash can spread onto the tummy and buttocks.

Make your Toddlers air travel a fun ride
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 17-Nov-2008

Flying with your toddler can be a wonderful experience or a miserable adventure, the choice is yours. A little bit of intelligent planning before your travel can gift your child a happy ride and everyone else as well.

toddler at airport

Preparation before you leave:

  1. Choose a non peak travel schedule if possible, as your child will be stress free in less crowd and so will you.
  2. Try to take flight according to child's eating and sleeping schedule. It's a good idea to keep their schedule as normal as possible when flying.
  3. If your child is used to of some comfort item like special blanket or any toy. Try to carry them along with you.
  4. Pack your bag with lots of snacks and drinks for your baby. You never know flight can get delayed too.
  5. Carry lots of activities that you baby love to play with. May be a video game or a music player. Children get bored very soon while sitting so you must have some interesting things to entertain them.
  6. Before travelling do speak to your child. Try and explain them about the airport rules. Teach them how to behave during the security check and baggage screening. I know they are too small to understand all these technicalities but children learn very fast.

Play it safe near the water- water safety
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 01-Nov-2008

Children love to play in water. Summer is synonymous with water play but unfortunately that can spell disaster. As a parent you need to protect your child and take the possible safety measures. Be your children's lifeguard! Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under, with children under age 5 at the highest risk. Many drownings and near drownings occur when children are left unattended by a pool, pond or in the bath.

pool-safety

Precautions that you can take to protect your children:

  • Stay within arms' reach of children - don't leave children unsupervised as drownings can occur in as little as 10 seconds.
  • Enroll your children in swimming and water safety courses.
  • Make sure children are wearing an approved life jacket or personal flotation device when playing near water.
  • Infants who cannot sit unsupported and are too young to wear a personal flotation device should be held by an adult at all times.
  • Inform your child of the methods to obtain help.

Read to your child and enjoy
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Oct-2008

A child's reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. Children may not understand the importance of studies and find it boring, so you need to make the entire process interesting from a young age. Even if you don't have time to exercise, or even to cook, do take out at least 20 minutes daily and read out loud books to your child according to their age and make it a source of game for them.

Babies and Jaundice, what is it and how you can help
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 07-Oct-2008

Jaundice is a yellow color that can be seen in the skin, mucous membranes, or eyes. When red blood cells break down, bilirubin is released into the bloodstream. Jaundice is caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the blood. The liver changes bilirubin so that it can leave the body. Jaundice is very common in newborn babies. It is usually easy to spot because the baby's skin and whites of the eyes turn a yellow color. Babies become jaundiced when they have too much bilirubin in their blood. Jaundice usually is not a problem. But in rare cases, too much bilirubin in the blood can cause brain damage. This can lead to hearing loss, mental retardation, and behavior problems.

Child abuse, it is never OK
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 02-Oct-2008

It's our misfortune that every day there are children living hungry, neglected, sexually exploited, feeling unloved and fearful and the sad reality is that child abuse is severely underreported. Even if abuse has been reported victims almost never speak of their abuse for fear of retaliation. Child abuse refers to any form of physical, psychological, social, emotional or sexual maltreatment of a child.

In the midst of joy of having a baby mothers mostly ignore their fitness. Fortunately, there are some simple exercises that you can do to quickly reduce and eliminate this abdominal fat and keep your stomach looking good.

mother with new born

When should you start?

If you had a vaginal birth, you can start most regular activities again as soon as you feel comfortable. After a cesarean birth, exercise can be started when you're comfortable and have discussed your exercise plans with a physiotherapist, doctor or other health practitioner. Start slowly, and then gradually build up the length of exercise. If you have heavier and brighter bleeding after exercise, you need to slow down. If you feel pain while exercising, stop and rest.

Walking is really the most important milestone in your child's life. This inculcates the feeling of independence in child leaving behind the babyhood. Mostly from eight months baby starts crawling, rolling over and gradually gain muscle strength and coordination required to walk. Coping with Down Syndrome
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 23-Aug-2008

Down syndrome (DS), also called Trisomy 21, is a combination of physical abnormalities and mental retardation characterized by a genetic defect in chromosome pair 21. Down syndrome is the most common cause of mental retardation and malformation in a newborn. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who described the syndrome back in 1866.

child-boy-with-downs-syndrome

The cause of Down syndrome was then discovered in 1959. Down syndrome is relatively well known, with distinctive characteristics such as mental retardation, distinguishing facial features, and other traits. In the United States, Down syndrome occurs in 1 in 800 live births, and approximately 6000 children are born with Down syndrome each year. About 85% of infants with Down syndrome survive 1 year, and 50% of people with Down syndrome live longer than 50 years.

Does your child bite?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 09-Aug-2008

Once your child bites someone, you feel panic, embarrassment and horror. You do not know where to look or what to do! Why did this happen? Am l to blame? You ask yourself is something wrong with my child? Let me reassure you, biting is quite common among young children. It happens for different reasons with different children and under different circumstances.

Parents can do lots of things to help prevent and solve this problem. Before approaching to end the problem look at why it is happening. Due to their limited language and our limited "mind-reading" skills, we are unable to really know exactly what their thinking! Some developmental theorists suggest that biting may be a form of exploration, but as parents we can make some educated guesses.
