Fulfilling the role of Mom while holding down a job is really tough but trust me it's not impossible. Little planning and family cooperation can balance your personal and professional life. Fortunately, the prevailing winds are beginning to change, and women are finding they can balance work and family.

Tips to balance your home and job: Mostly we thing kids are dependent on us but this not completely true. They are because we make them so. As a working mom you need to make your child independent. Teach them the basic routine things like cleaning up their rooms, getting ready for school and going alone to the bathroom etc. Trust me, your child will learn these small things very soon and this will make them independent in life which is really very good for their bright future.

working mom
  • Create a routine of playing, study, eating etc and pass the information to your child. So in case you are not around, your child does all his important tasks in time.  Speak to your child and explain the things, they will take it positively.
  • If you have hired nanny, arrange for a written contact with her regarding what is expected out of her and what is not. You can set clear guidelines for handling your child and make them exactly the way you want your child to be reared.
  • Make a visit to your child's school, try to be friendly with all his friends and see whether your child is in good company or not because he is spending more time with them than you. Speak to teachers if required to understand the performance of your child.

Talk to Your Child about HIV/AIDS
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Aug-2009

Raising a child is the most gratifying as well toughest job. It's the duty of responsible parents to create the awareness of all social issues among children. There are lots of complex matters all around that are difficult for children to understand and for adults to explain. Educating children about sex, HIV/AIDS is very important so that they don't get any erroneous information from wrong sources. Also look through our other AIDS article.

Here are some tips on how to start the discussion:

  • Before initiating the conversation think about the information you want to discuss with your child keeping into consideration child's age, prior knowledge and influences, as well as your own religious and cultural values. Child psychologists think that the sooner you talk about it to your child the better.

aids

  • Assemble all important and correct information about HIV/AIDS from doctors, friends and informative websites, so that you can convey accurate and correct information to your child.
  • To initiate you can use the terms like: "Have you heard about AIDS before? Well, what do you think AIDS is?" This way, you can discover what she/he already understands and work from there.
  • Be honest and frank with your child. If you are uncomfortable, they are too while discussing such topics. Share your feelings and make them comfortable so that they can easily say their doubts with you. Children's misconceptions about AIDS can be pretty scary, so it's important to correct them as soon as possible.
  • Exchange your ideas and make the conversation friendly don't make it like a lecture otherwise your child will not take any interest. Listen to what they have to say and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Discuss peer pressure, and encourage your child to use his or her own judgment when making critical decisions. Even if you don't agree with your child don't pass any judgment
  • Provide them with educational material or web sites where they can learn in private. Then discuss their experiences later.

Tips to conceive soon
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Aug-2009

Every woman's dream is to become mother and feel her baby in the lap. Motherhood is the ultimate dream role which makes a women complete. However to get pregnant is sometime very easy for few but conceiving a child can be elusive and frustrating for some. By following some tips you can conceive soon and don't have to wait long and long for your baby.

getting pregnant

Healthy Life style:

  • Both the partners should take healthy food.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Keep yourself stress free.
  • Have a good sleep.
  • Quit smoking and drinking. Also quit caffeine.
  • Take Folic acid (vitamin B-9), this plays an essential role in a baby's development. A daily prenatal vitamin or folic acid supplement beginning a few months before conception significantly reduces the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.

Knowing your Ovulation date:

1.      Menstruation cycle:

  • You must know your monthly cycle. If you have a regular 28 day cycle your ovulation occurs 14 days after the first day of menstruation (First day of your menstruation is the day 1). So you must have intercourse 2, 3 days before ovulation as egg rests in the body only for 12 - 24 hrs.
  • This method won't work if cycles are short, irregular or unpredictable.
  • If menstrual cycles are more than 28 days long but are consistent, subtract 18 from the average number of days in your cycles. On that day in the cycle is when ovulation can be expected to take place.

Motivate your child to clean their room
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Aug-2009

As responsible parents it's our duty to make our child responsible and discipline. A sense of cleanliness should be developed among children from the very childhood and one of the first steps could be motivating them to keep their room clean. Normally your child will never find interest in cleaning their room so you need to follow some simple rules to encourage them.

Motivate your child to clean their room.

Teaching your child to keep a clean room:

  • Make a fixed place for all the materials of your child's room and label them, like label a cabinet as "Toys" and place all the toys over there, explain this to your child that after playing they should keep back all the toys in its designated place.
  • Always remember child do whatever they see so you need to set an example of cleanliness by keeping the house in good order. Get the whole family involved in the cleaning process. Enjoy the time with music so that your child can take this as a part of life not as a tough work.
  • Appreciation and simple reward can really make the difference.
  • Make the cleaning process more challenging by setting a timer, turning on some lively music. Let him know that when he finishes, he can go outside and play.
  • Make a routine. Give a list of work he needs to do for the day. Encourage him to look at the list upon awakening to see what needs to be done for that day. This is a good way to help your child set goals and become more responsible.
  • Your child can't be perfect like you so don't criticize or say anything negative. Always try to appreciate.

Helping to develop social skills in toddlers
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Jan-2009

Toddler develop great social skills through the interaction they have with people around them. Different activities help to develop mental, physical, social and emotional skills to stimulate your children's imagination and creativity. As a parent you should involve your child in such activities through which your toddler can understand and learn the world around him.

sharing

Some of the activities that can enhance your toddler's social skills are mentioned here:

  • Importance of Money: Give your child different coins and ask them to count them. Teach your child how to use the money and about money which will enable them to understand the value of it.
  • Indulge them in cooking: Accompany your child in mixing, baking, measuring the ingredients. These are the tasks your kid will enjoy doing and it goes not matter if they make a mess
  • Cleaning work through game: This will give them the sense of responsibility and will be hygienic from the very beginning of their life and they will do it as part of the "norm".
  • Encouraging Play with Others: Always involve and encourage your child to play in a group. This will inculcate the team skills in your child. They will watch and often copy what they see others do, even though they're not yet able to play with them. I am sure untill now your toddler thinks everything is MINE, but they need to learn the skill of sharing. As they grow and become more experienced at play, they'll learn to play with other children. This is called "cooperative" play, and usually happens after the age of 3. In cooperative play, children learn to work and solve problems together, and develop their social skills.

Flying with your toddler can be a wonderful experience or a miserable adventure, the choice is yours. A little bit of intelligent planning before your travel can gift your child a happy ride and everyone else as well.

toddler at airport

Preparation before you leave:

  1. Choose a non peak travel schedule if possible, as your child will be stress free in less crowd and so will you.
  2. Try to take flight according to child's eating and sleeping schedule. It's a good idea to keep their schedule as normal as possible when flying.
  3. If your child is used to of some comfort item like special blanket or any toy. Try to carry them along with you.
  4. Pack your bag with lots of snacks and drinks for your baby. You never know flight can get delayed too.
  5. Carry lots of activities that you baby love to play with. May be a video game or a music player. Children get bored very soon while sitting so you must have some interesting things to entertain them.
  6. Before travelling do speak to your child. Try and explain them about the airport rules. Teach them how to behave during the security check and baggage screening. I know they are too small to understand all these technicalities but children learn very fast.

Play it safe near the water- water safety
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 01-Nov-2008

Children love to play in water. Summer is synonymous with water play but unfortunately that can spell disaster. As a parent you need to protect your child and take the possible safety measures. Be your children's lifeguard! Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under, with children under age 5 at the highest risk. Many drownings and near drownings occur when children are left unattended by a pool, pond or in the bath.

pool-safety

Precautions that you can take to protect your children:

  • Stay within arms' reach of children - don't leave children unsupervised as drownings can occur in as little as 10 seconds.
  • Enroll your children in swimming and water safety courses.
  • Make sure children are wearing an approved life jacket or personal flotation device when playing near water.
  • Infants who cannot sit unsupported and are too young to wear a personal flotation device should be held by an adult at all times.
  • Inform your child of the methods to obtain help.

Read to your child and enjoy

A child's reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. Children may not understand the importance of studies and find it boring, so you need to make the entire process interesting from a young age. Even if you don't have time to exercise, or even to cook, do take out at least 20 minutes daily and read out loud books to your child according to their age and make it a source of game for them.

Babies and Jaundice, what is it and how you can help
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 07-Oct-2008

Jaundice is a yellow color that can be seen in the skin, mucous membranes, or eyes. When red blood cells break down, bilirubin is released into the bloodstream. Jaundice is caused by a build-up of bilirubin in the blood. The liver changes bilirubin so that it can leave the body. Jaundice is very common in newborn babies. It is usually easy to spot because the baby's skin and whites of the eyes turn a yellow color. Babies become jaundiced when they have too much bilirubin in their blood. Jaundice usually is not a problem. But in rare cases, too much bilirubin in the blood can cause brain damage. This can lead to hearing loss, mental retardation, and behavior problems.
