Study Shows Big Difference in How Much We Spend When Shopping with Friends

A study conducted in the United Kingdom set out to see what effect shopping with our friends has, in comparison to what we do when we shop alone. The results were not all that surprising.

It turns out the women in the study spend £900 (about $1,300) more a year in comparison to their solo shopping counterparts. That’s some serious pocket change, but apparently there is an upside.

The study, which polled over 2000 women, was sponsored by Liverpool One, which is a development project that sought to redevelop the city through retail initiatives, and was published in the website Dailymail.co.uk. Despite the clear vested interest in studying the shopping habits of its potential customers, the study was able to lend some insight into how our spending habits are affected by our friends.

It looks like there were also some positive aspects to shopping with your friends. Though it might put a bigger dent in their bank accounts, the women who reported shopping with their girlfriends on a regular bases said that they enjoyed the experience more, and felt more connected with their friends. The majority of the women polled also reported that they enjoyed getting input from their friends on clothes that they bought, and over two thirds of the women felt more confident in clothes the bought with their friends.

The study found some negative points with shopping with friends too though, 1 out of every 10 women in the study ended up returning an item they had purchased after being encouraged to buy it by a friend. Not a terrible statistic, but in the a bigger context it’s pretty clear that our friends have a huge impact on the decisions we make. All that being said, I think the more relevant decision boils down to be who we choose to be friends with, though I didn’t see any data in the study to suggest this – I think it’s pretty obvious that good friends will help you make good decisions both in and outside of the mall.

Justin Bieber Booed at the BMAs

After Justin Bieber was announced as the winner of the Milestone Award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the crowd booed him! The Biebs looked a bit surprised (probably by the booing more so than winning the award) as he took the stage to accept.

During his acceptance speech, Bieber seemed to be addressing those folks who booed him directly, (and perhaps his other critics as well), when he said, “I really just want to say… It should really just be about the music. It should be about the craft… this is not a gimmick… I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously.”

Biebs beat out fellow finalists Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift for the Milestone Award. This year was the first year for the Award, which was presented by Chevrolet and decided based on millions of votes from fans.

Bieber is no stranger to being booed. He has previously encountered booing at one of his own concerts (that he arrived to hours late), at a New York Knicks basketball game, and at a Canadian Football Game.

Bieber is also no stranger to controversy. He has been in the news a lot recently for all sorts of drama, including getting caught smoking marijuana, walking around shirtless in an airport in Poland, and for a video showing him involved in an altercation with a member of the paparazzi in London in March of this year.

Back to the BMAs: In addition to the Milestone Award, Bieber also won awards for Male Artist of the Year and Social Artist of the Year. He was nominated for Artist of the Year, which he lost to Taylor Swift; as well as Pop Artist of the Year, which was won by One Direction. Bieber’s album, “Believe,” was nominated for Pop Album of the Year, but was beaten by Adele’s, “21.”

The Biebs performed his song “Take You” as well as the song “#thatPOWER” with will.i.am at the award ceremony, which took place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

All-in-all, 2 performances and 3 awards to bring home? Not a bad night for the 19-year-old, booing or no booing.

DIY Fashion: Turn 1 Belt into 5 Different Accessories

Do you have an old belt you never use anymore? Recycle it into one of five different stylish accessories! The perfect 2 in 1: get rid of things you don’t use and simultaneously get new things!

The items you can make include a modern cuff, a metallic hair comb, a studded collar necklace, leather-“feather” earrings, or a wrap bracelet.

You will need a few things to get started with this arts and crafts project, depending on what you decide to make.

Depending on what you make, you will need:

5 jump rings (2 for earrings, 3 for collar)
Clasp
Chain
Hair comb
Earring hooks
VELCRO Brand Black Coins (with Sticky Back)
Belt (of course)

Now, to get started! Pick one (or several!) of these great options.

Studded collar necklace

For this, get together the 3 jump rings, clasp, and chain. Cut two triangles of the same size (use a stencil to be sure). Connect the pieces in the middle with a jump ring, and use the other two rings to connect the chain on the other ends. Add studs or other flare for a great final product!

Cuff

Simply cut a piece of the belt about two inches wide, and attach using the VELCRO black coins. How easy is that!

Wrap Bracelet

This one makes great use of the skinny ends of the belt. Simply wrap around and attach again with the VELCRO coins.

Feather-Inspired Earrings

Wrap belts have the perfect small ends to easily make dangly earrings. Using a safety pin, make a hole in the leather. Use pliers to add the jump rings.

Hair Comb

Cut out a bunch of triangles, and use your hot glue gun to paste them onto a basic black side comb. A great addition to your up-do!

From one belt, so many options!

Four Cocktails to Mix up for Brunch

Brunch has always been a favorite pastime of mine. It enables me to fend off my hangover and discuss what got into my girlfriends last night. Brunch is the last ditch effort to pretend like you don’t have to drag yourself into the rat race tomorrow and simultaneously try NOT to kill yourself. So drink it up ladies because this is the last chance before Monday morning shows its sorry behind. BOOOO MONDAYS BOOOOOOO!

I’ve got cocktails here to freshen up brunch because lets face it, if we had to consume one more Andre based mimosa we were going to rip off our Shellac nails without the help of acetone.

Wakey Wakey Eggs and Bakey

This one is for all my mixologists

1½ oz. bacon infused gin
1 oz. egg whites
½ oz. fresh lemon juice
½ oz. honey syrup

I loved this drink because it reminded me of a Pisco sour, a personal favorite of mine.

To create bacon infused gin, simply place a few pieces of bacon in a bottle of gin and let it sit in the fridge over night. For honey syrup mix hot water, honey, and sugar together until the sugar is completely dissolved. To make the cocktail put everything into a shaker filled with ice and shake. Pour into a glass and serve with eggs any style.

Island Hydration (sort of)

To help with that impending hangover try this coconut water cocktail.

2 oz. pineapple juice
1 oz. coconut water
1 oz. white rum

This recipe is super easy. Just pour the ingredients into a glass filled with ice. Enjoy!

Shaker’s Remorse

In college when you were caught doing the saunter of shame you were referred to as a shaker. Even though we have our BA’s some of us still commit this act over the weekend.

1 oz. Stolichnaya Blueberi Vodka
2 oz. prosecco
5 blackberries

First off all for those of you who don’t know what prosecco is it’s an Italian sparkling white wine. It’s the key ingredients in Bellinis. My girlfriend Sam introduced it to me and I’ve never looked back. It’s better than American sparkling white wine and still cheaper than champagne.

Muddle the berries, add the vodka, and shake. Then pour into a glass filled with shaved ice and add prosecco. Also try not to leave your jewelry at his place.

The Bitter Hottie

Did you spy your crush or ex with another girl last night? If so you may be in desperate need of the bitter hottie… only because it matches you so well. You’re sexy but you’re pissed. It’s ok girl, he was only a junior level associate anyways

2 oz. IPA
1 oz. Sriracha sauce
2 oz. limejuice lime
2 oz. bitters

Pour all ingredients into a glass filled with ice. Sip Away.
