How to deal with the Layoff

In this difficult economic scenario, layoff has become very common situation of most of our life and this gives us depression. But everyone going through this situation should face it strongly with a belief that every problem has a solution.

How to deal with Layoff

Immediate action:

  • Go to the unemployment office of your state and check with them in case you qualify for unemployment insurance. If yes, apply immediately. You'll be surprised at the resources they have to offer, from health insurance information to budget tips, writing a resume, going to college or trade school.
  • Economize your budget: Cut down your expenses and don't spend money on less important stuffs. Your priorities should be shelter, utilities, food and transportation.
  • If you have children in college or in a private school, contact the financial aid office and inform them of your layoff. They may provide emergency financial aid so that your child's education will not have to suffer.
  • Handle Health: You usually get 60 days to decide whether to sign on to your former employer's health plan through a legal process called COBRA or find other insurance options. So you must decide this at the earliest.

Survive the situation:

  • Control your emotions: It's very natural to feel depressed after layoff however you must understand that these emotions cannot control your future. It is very important to move forward.
  • Focus: Focus your energy and prioritize the work and decide what exactly you want. Write a list with three columns: "Things I Have to do", "Things I Want to do" and Things I Could Do".

  • Start your job search: Initiate your job search through internet. Post your resume on the job portals like MSN Careers, Job Star and Resume-Resource. Try to visit job fair or take reference from friends and colleague. Checking with your last employers is also helpful.

  • Utilize your time: when you are busy in job, you never get time to do the things you want to do. This is the best time, go to the places you always wanted to, read some good books such as Think and Grow Rich, Integrity is Everything, The Power of the Subconscious Mind. Make all essential changes in yourself that you want to be as a person. May be you have a hobby you've always dreamed of turning into a profession, this is the best time, go for it.

  • Meditate: Do some meditation or Yoga, this will keep your mind relax and inculcate a power and energy to fight against the situation.

  • Grab your life: It's your life never let it go off your hands. Just grab it and try to have a full control of your future. Reach out of your current situation and grab what you truly want in life.

Whatever is your income you should always save some money for difficult time. Rest you should be confident to stand all over again. That's what life is all about, falling and again standing with fresh spirit. Keep Going.
