How to Blanch and Shell Chestnuts


The chestnut has originally come from a kingdom in Asia Minor. It has been used for food since those times.Chestnuts trees are related to the oak and can live for 500 years. Chestnuts are usually roasted, boiled or ground into flour that is used to make bread, cookies and cakes.This nutritious nut is enclosed in a prickly case where the nut is protected by a hard inedible brown membrane. This is one of the many recipes that allow you take the inedible membrane and enjoy the true woodland taste of the chestnut.

Ingredients

  • 1Kg of chestnuts
  • water

Method

1. Preheat oven to 450?F.

2. Place chestnuts in cold water; discard those that float.

3. Dry and slit each shell 1/2 to 3/4 inch on each side.

4. Place in a saucepan, add oil and shake pan over heat for five minutes.

5. Roast in oven for another five minutes.

6. When cool enough to handle, remove shells and brown skin underneath with a sharp paring knife. Enjoy!
