    mom lecturing teen daughter

So who is this new person that my used-to-be-child, is bringing home to dinner? You ask yourself this and many other questions as your over-protective husband loads up his 12-gauge shotgun ready to hunt the boy that he won’t let prey on his baby girl.

Maybe it’s your son’s first date and he wants to use the car to take his sweetie pie around town. But remember, he’s seventeen with a lead foot and he already has two tickets to his name thus raising his insurance.

Parents, what do you do when your children start dating?

You dread to think about it, I know. Your kids are getting older; the innocent years of their childhood are only to become memories in digital photo albums on the family computer. Parents, please realize this is all a part of growing up. Heck do you honestly think that your parents were happy with all of dating choices, probably not.

Embrace your children as they grow into mature adults. Give them hope; tell them stories about your dating joys and woes when you were their age. Truth be told, I still like to hear those same ol’ stories about when my parents were dating. It gives me a slice of hope and also great to hear.

So parents, single or married, be there for your kids when they need your advice, though you may not agree with who they’re with at the time. Remember; opposition creates more walls.

    road trip

When I was younger, I actually got excited for road trips. I still do. And I didn’t have video games and a TV and all sorts of other gadgets in the car to keep me occupied. My mom and I played roadtrip games like the license plate alphabet game. My mom, by the way, was awesome and very creative at coming up with ways to keep me entertained on even the longest of trips.

One summer we drove, (just the two of us), from Michigan to Louisiana and back again. This was pre-GPS and my mom kept me busy looking at maps. I even figured out a fun shortcut that shaved about an hour off our trip and made me feel all-so-grownup and important.

Children today tend to be a bit more challenging to keep entertained and occupied on roadtrips but it’s not an impossible feat.

    Tips for Roadtrips with Kids

    • Plan Ahead – Involve your children in the planning process. Tell them ahead of time how long the trip will take, where’re you going, and show them on a map. A road trip can be stressful for a child when they don’t know the who, what, when and where of it all.
    • Take Time to Smell the Proverbial Roses – Although as adults, we may be focused on getting to our destination as quickly as possible, 5 straight hours in a car is hard on a child. Plan in some stops and sightseeing along the way. Generally, a stop every 2 hours or less is good. Longer than that and you’re in for some grumpy little ones.
    • Kid Friendly Sights – Rather than planning the day of shopping you’d like to do in Chicago, take into account what your kids would rather be doing. Aquariums, amusement parks, and weird tourist attractions will be a much bigger hit with the little ones.

Are you also worried about the cold and cough your child is suffering from? Coughing is a very common symptom in children and usually accompanies an infection with the common cold virus. Cough can be of many types, whooping cough, dry cough, chesty cough, cough with vomiting or barky cough. However you need to understand the cause of your child's cough in order provide appropriate help and treatment.

coughHow to understand the type of cough:

    1. When your child is coughing long or cannot draw breath, possibly its whooping cough, which is caused by bacteria not virus.
    2. If your child is feeling like a tickle in the back of the throat, that symbolizes dry cough that is not in itself dangerous, but a natural and normal reaction to secretions in the respiratory tract.
    3. If there is wheezing while inhaling possibly its barky cough which is commonly brought on by a viral upper respiratory infection, or in some cases allergies.
    4. Chesty cough is due to virus can get very loud and worrisome, but they don't always signal a major infection. If your child is still eating, has energy and can sleep at night, they'll likely kick the cough in 7 to 10 days.
    5. If your child or baby has a cough, and throws up after coughing, it doesn't necessarily mean they have a more serious infection. If your child coughs violently for over 2 weeks with vomiting, can't stop coughing and can't breathe, they may have whooping cough.

Fulfilling the role of Mom while holding down a job is really tough but trust me it's not impossible. Little planning and family cooperation can balance your personal and professional life. Fortunately, the prevailing winds are beginning to change, and women are finding they can balance work and family.

Tips to balance your home and job: Mostly we thing kids are dependent on us but this not completely true. They are because we make them so. As a working mom you need to make your child independent. Teach them the basic routine things like cleaning up their rooms, getting ready for school and going alone to the bathroom etc. Trust me, your child will learn these small things very soon and this will make them independent in life which is really very good for their bright future.

    • Create a routine of playing, study, eating etc and pass the information to your child. So in case you are not around, your child does all his important tasks in time.  Speak to your child and explain the things, they will take it positively.
    • If you have hired nanny, arrange for a written contact with her regarding what is expected out of her and what is not. You can set clear guidelines for handling your child and make them exactly the way you want your child to be reared.
    • Make a visit to your child's school, try to be friendly with all his friends and see whether your child is in good company or not because he is spending more time with them than you. Speak to teachers if required to understand the performance of your child.
