Baby teething

Teething is a very important development in your child's body and every kid has a different experience. As a parent you have to take very good care of your child during the period of teething as the whole process is little painful for your child. The age at which the first tooth appears differs greatly from child to child. Usually, however, the first tooth - which tends to be in the middle of the lower jaw - appears at around six months of age. The complete set of 20 primary teeth (baby teeth) is usually present by the age of two-and-a-half years.

How do you know your baby has started teething?

  • If you see a baby who is fussy, drooling, sticking his hand in his mouth, and you can't find any other problems, then it's probably teething.
  • In some kids you may see thin white line of a tooth poking through baby's gums with no warning signs at all.
  • Biting anything and everything
  • Tender gums
  • Teething gums may be swollen and red or even bruised.
  • Pain in the gums may travel to the ears and cheeks particularly when the back molars begin coming in. This is why you may see your baby rubbing their cheeks or pulling at their ears.
  • Not sleeping well.
  • Above symptoms followed by fever and loose stools

How to help your child during teething:

  • Give the child something hard to chew on.
  • Teething rings that can be cooled in the fridge can be particularly soothing.
  • Sugar-free paracetamol suspension such as Calpol or Tylenol may also be given. Be sure to consult your child's doctor.

The teething process will come and go just like so many other things with new babies.  Keep trying different things until you find what provides the best relief for your child.

How many teeth come and at what age: In total there are twenty primary (first) teeth. Most children have a full set of primary teeth by the time they are around two or three years old.

teeth

  • Incisors teeth: Two central bottom & two central top teeth. Mostly comes at the age of 6 to 7 months.
  • Two more incisors: Top & bottom; making four top & four bottom teeth in all. Mostly comes at the age of 7 to 9 months.
  • First molars: Double teeth for chewing. Mostly comes at the age of 10 to 14 months.
  • Canines: The pointed teeth, comes at the age of 15 to 18 months.
  • Second molars: The second set of double teeth at the back. Mostly comes at the age of 2 to 3 years.

Don't worry if teething is delayed in your child's case. It's natural but you must contact doctor for proper checkup.
