Single Mom - not a problem!

Being a parent is a big responsibility and very difficult at times, but being a single mom can be even more challenging. During tough time you never find anyone around to help you. That's when single moms must take the initiative and search for the answers. It's often helpful to try tips and suggestions offered by other single moms. Mostly there is an argument in our society that single moms cannot raise her son emotionally and physically healthy and that their sons tend to have an effeminate side to their personalities, that is, traits that are more often associated with traditional feminine gender roles rather than masculine roles. But with time myths are breaking. Some of the most famous celebrities raised by single moms are Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, Tom Cruise and Les Brown.

Here are some tips to help you embrace the challenge and be a good parent to your kids.

  • If you are a new single mother due to separation, divorce or the end of a partnership then it's important to start a new beginning. You and your kid both need stability in the big world of change, so even though some circumstances have changed, it doesn't mean that all of them will. Continue the family rituals and routine in the same manner as it was spent before the change, as well as create new time and ways. Do take help and suggestions from your child. At times kids are smarter than you.

  • Be patient and understand yourself. Being a single mom is not so easy so you should have confidence in yourself. Losing hope will be something like giving up the game before the finishing the line.

  • You should not be ashamed of seeking help from family, friends, community and government. Explore any resource available that may help to give you some added reassurance, peace and help in this extraordinary process of parenting.

  • While dating single mom should be very cautious. As your potential mate isn't only dating you, they're dating your children as well. And in the absence of fatherly affection child gets attached to the man very soon. So date for several months without children involved and really try to get to know if they are right for you first. Then add the kids in the mix and make sure they are right for them as well.

  • Male children need the guidance and support of a male role model as well as that of a female caregiver. If you are a single mom without a man in your life, find a trusted male friend or family member who would be willing to take an active role in the life of your child. This can be the husband or partner of a friend, or any trusted family member.

  • It's arduous enough for a married mom to transport kids to sporting events, school functions, and other places kids typically go. When you're a single mom it gets even more strenuous because you don't have the help of a partner or spouse.

  • Working outside the home is especially difficult for single moms. There is often no one to lend a helping hand when children become sick and can't attend daycare. Most employers understand the responsibilities of single moms and are willing to work with them in regards to matters such as this. There are many others in the same position, and a good employer won't hold an occasional absence against an employee in this situation. If you find yourself having to leave work for an extended period of time because of a sick child, the laws in your state will prevent your employer from holding that absence against you.

Financial planning for single mom:

save money

  • Income may be cut short by the death or estrangement from the spouse. A housewife may have to take up a job to make ends meet. Expenditures need to be budgeted. You also need to teach your children the importance of saving money.

  • Even if you have plenty of wealth around, always made your child realize the pride in earning and gaining financial independence instead of envying others wealth.

  • If your child has seen their mother to struggle for every single penny they naturally realize the value of money and habit of saving money inculcates in them automatically.

How to deal with the questions about the father:

  • Children of single moms will always have questions regarding their father. You should always try to connect your child with their father even though they had no memories of him whatsoever.

  • Even if the mother has bitterness regarding her departed or estranged husband she should never dump her negative feelings regarding her husband on her children.

  • Children's questions regarding the father need age appropriate answers which should be honest and real without excessive negative or positive emotions attached as they will otherwise confuse the child.

  • It is likely that your child will eventually desire to have a closer relationship with their father in which case you have to tell yourself that this is only natural, as they are half of him as they are half of you.

How to balance work and home: Balancing home and work is difficult even in a normal situation of two parents so managing both being a single mother is really very tough.

balance work and home
  • Strength and dedication matters the most. So always be confident and never consider anything impossible.

  • Get up early in the morning and complete every household work so that your child need not bother about domestic issues but spend time studying instead.

  • If your child is not well, come home to see them from office at intervals and during the lunch break, and work extra time in office to compensate.

  • Your child will definitely feel the absence of their father from time to time but they should never feel unattended. You as a mother should manage every need that a father generally takes care of. This will tighten the bond of love and respect between you and your child.

  • Joining a support group of single mothers may help. You could come up with an arrangement by which all of you take turns babysitting one another's children. You may also involve a trusted family member, friend or neighbor to take care of your children when you are at work.

  • Trying to coincide your work timings with your child's school, tutorial or extra-curricular timings may help. If you have no support from friends or family, try to find a good creche for your children.

Single mothers often neglect their own well-being for the sake of their children. If you are not well how can you take care of your child? There is no hard and fast formula of a happy family and truth lies in the fact that a family having just one parent can also be a happy functional family.  Cheers to happy living!
