Paris and the Eiffel Tower
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 07-Jun-2008

Last night l was watching cable and they showed a great documentary on the Eiffel Tower. So l thought l would also write a post about some interesting facts. Maybe you can use them to impress someone at your next dinner party!

  • The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower built on the Champ de Mars beside the Seine River in Paris.
  • It was completed in 1889, taking less than 2 years.
  • Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, who paid for its construction form his own money and the tallest building Paris
  • Depending on the ambient temperature, the top of the tower may shift away from the sun by up to 18 cm because of thermal expansion of the metal on the side facing the sun!

Singapore - A Dream Destination
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 08-Dec-2008

Singapore's strategic location at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula has ensured its importance, which is greater than its size might seem to justify. Singapore consists of the island of Singapore and some 63 islets within its territorial waters. Many of the city's attractions are clustered closely together. Singapore was separated from the rest of Malaysia on 9 August 1965, and became a sovereign, democratic and independent nation. Singapore is generally hot and humid. It's warm and humid year round, with the temperature almost never dropping below 20°C (68°F), even at night, and usually climbing to 30°C (86°F) during the day. For those who enjoy the sun and the beach, Singapore is an ideal place for everyone. Once you go there, you will keep coming back, we do!

singapore

History: Singapore, an island-state in Southeast Asia, was founded as a British trading colony in 1819 which joined Malaysia in 1963, but withdrew two years later and became independent.Singapore_map Now it is one of the world's most prosperous countries, with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. Singapore's strategic location combined with a largely corruption-free government, skilled work force, pro-foreign investment and export-oriented led to a successful free-market economy which attracts international investment funds on a large scale despite its relatively high-cost operating environment.

Easter and its significance
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Apr-2009

Easter is the sacred celebration of Christ's resurrection from the dead. Easter recalls the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a joyous festival that coincides with the arrival of the spring season. The date of Easter varies from March 22 to April 25. Protestants and Roman Catholics observe Easter on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, the full moon following the vernal equinox. The English name "Easter" according to the Venerable Bede, comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Eostre", the goddess of fertility and birth. Easter abounds with symbolism. The rabbit, bunny, lamb, cross, lighted candles, eggs and chicks, are all seen as having importance in the celebration of Easter.

Happy_Easter

Importance of "The Great Fifty Days": The Great Fifty Days begins with Easter Sunday and concludes on the Day of Pentecost. (The word Pentecost actually comes from the Greek word for fifty.) During these fifty days several customs are often observed that assist in highlighting the festivity of the season.

significance of easter

  • The paschal candle is moved from its normal place near the baptismal font to a prominent place near the altar.
  • The liturgical color of white is used during the entire fifty days-longer than at any other time of the church year.
  • The "Alleluia," which is omitted during the penitential season of Lent, is restored to the liturgy as the premier expression of joy celebrating Jesus' resurrection.

The seven weeks that span the time between Jesus' resurrection and the sending of the Spirit are sometimes even called a "week of weeks."

The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, and it was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). The Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles) from east to west of China. Ganges - religious icon of India
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 05-May-2009

Ganges is one of the major rivers of the Indian subcontinent, flowing east through the Gangetic Plain of northern India into Bangladesh. The 2,510 km (1,560 mi) river rises in the western Himalayas in the Uttarakhand state of India, and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. Ganges is considered as a holy river by Indians and worshipped as the goddess Ganga. It is believed that bathing in the river Ganga causes the remission of sins and facilitates the attainment of salvation or nirvana.

Ganges

This deep-rooted truth is proved by the fact that people travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga at Varanasi or other places located on the banks of this holy river. Some of these sacred places, located on the Ganga, are Varanasi, Haridwar and Prayag (Allahabad). As soon as the day begins, devout Hindus begin to give their offerings of flowers or food, throwing hand full of grain or garlands of marigolds or pink lotuses into the Ganges.

Solar power - A great free source of energy
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Jan-2009

Solar power is energy which comes from the sun. This energy is very powerful and hits the earth regardless of whether or not we take advantage of it. In fact, the sunlight that shines on the Earth in just one hour could meet world energy demand for an entire year! And just incase you get that question when you are playing Trivial Pursuit "Solar" is the Latin word for "sun." We can use solar power in two different ways: as a heat source, and as an energy source.

 solar energy  sun

Uses of Solar power.

  • Solar Cells: In a sunny climate, you can get enough power to run a 100W light bulb from just one square meter of solar panel. Also known as photoelectric or photovoltaic cells, these are the most common devices that turn sunlight into electricity. Solar cells are combined into modules of which solar panels are comprised.
  • Solar water heating: Heat from the Sun is used to heat water in glass panels on your roof. Solar water heating is easily worthwhile in places like California and Australia, where you get lots of sunshine. Mind you, as technology improves it's becoming worthwhile in the UK, where the sun does not come out as much.
