Ouch, Stretch Marks!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Apr-2008

Stretch marks or striae are a form of scarring on the skin with a silvery white appearance. They are caused by tearing of the skin and over time can fade but unfortunately not disappear completely. Stretch marks are because of the rapid stretching of the skin seen with rapid growth like that noted in puberty or weight gain especially during pregnancy. Stretch marks can also been seen on obese people, and can develop during rapid muscle growth from regular exercise.

Even pregnant celebs get them, here is a pic of Katie Holmes.

Psoriasis- An itchy skin problem
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 01-Dec-2008

Psoriasis is a non contagious common condition of the skin that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in red, dry patches of thickened skin. There are five types, each with unique signs and symptoms. As mentioned on psoriasis.org, Psoriasis affects an estimated 2-3 percent of the world's population and 125 million people worldwide have psoriasis, according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium.

Between 10-30% of people who develop psoriasis get a related form of arthritis called "psoriatic arthritis," which causes inflammation of the joints. Arthritis may be associated with your psoriasis. The scalp, elbows, knees and lower back are commonly affected, but the face is usually not.

psoriasis

Types of Psoriasis:

Psoriasis vulgaris: About 80% of people with psoriasis have this type, making it the most common. It is also called plaque psoriasis because of the characteristic plaques on the skin. The flaky silvery white buildup on top of the plaques is called scale; it is composed of dead skin cells. Skin affected with psoriasis is generally very dry, and other possible symptoms include skin pain, itching and cracking. psoriasis

Skinny models should be banned from catwalk
Pump it2 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Mar-2008

A 22-year-old South American model Luisel Ramos died of a heart attack after stepping off a runway in 2006. She had been in a three month diet of green leaves and diet Coke, after been told she could be an international sensation if she lost weight.

After six-month Luisel's sister, Eliana, also a teenage model, was found dead in her bathroom in Montevideo. She too suffered a heart attack. A post-mortem examination suggested that Ms. Ramos suffered from ‘alimentary deficiency'.

The effects of food additives and preservatives
Pump it2 Dump it0      Posted on: 20-Aug-2008

Have you ever thought about the effects of food additives and preservatives? Maybe not, but if you read on you may find out something that could save you or your loved ones.. For young generation especially, life is so busy that they don't have time to cook or shop daily and this is the reason they prefer fast-food, or food that you can take home, reheat and eat.

additives and preservatives

And once you are going for store food, you are taking home lots of preservatives and food additives. How many people actually bother to check the labels on the food they eat to know what all they are taking into their bodies? More than that, how many people are aware of the things that they ingest unintentionally through the pesticides, coatings and much more that are put on the things they eat? These preservatives are part of your foodstuffs, and may present threats and dangers.

Warts- not harmful but embarrassing!
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Nov-2008

Warts are small growths on the skin caused by a virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus resides in the bottom layer of the epidermis and replicates into almost normal-looking skin. Different sub-types of HPV cause different types of warts. Warts can be disfiguring and embarrassing, and occasionally they itch or hurt. Warts do not have "roots". They only grow in the top layer of skin, the epidermis. When they grow down, they displace the second layer of skin, the dermis. They do not grow into the dermis. Warts normally grow out of the skin in cylindrical columns. These are actually blood vessels that have grown rapidly and irregularly into the wart and have clotted off.

Types of Warts: There are 6 clinically different types.

Common warts have a rather bumpy surface called papules or plaques and appear commonly on the hands, elbows, knees and fingers (of children, in particular). They have a rough surface and frequently will have small tiny spots which are from blood vessels that have clotted.

Do you donate blood?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 19-Jun-2009

Every year millions of people die due to lack of blood, because it is said that every three seconds someone needs blood. This proves the importance of blood donation. There are lots of myths about blood donation like a vegetarian can't donate blood as their blood does not have enough iron. But these kinds of myths are not true. Anyone up to the age of 60 who is fit and healthy can give blood. But remember if you are pregnant or breast feeding you can't give blood, you need it for yourself and your baby, lol! donate blood

You must know there are many advantages of blood donation, let's check out..

  • Due to blood donation the count of blood cells decreases in our body, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce new red blood cells in order to replenish the loss. This helps to stimulate the production of new blood cells and refreshes the system.
  • Blood donation is an excellent way to get rid of excess iron accumulated in our body due to its overconsumption. Excessive of iron causes Hemochromitosis, a genetic disorder. This condition may lead to organ damage.
  •  Blood donation helps to alleviate some major health problems like heart diseases. It has been observed that increase in blood iron level increases the chance of heart disease. Increases blood iron level favors this process of cholesterol oxidation and thus leads to heart disease. Regular blood donation helps especially males in loosing iron on regular basis. It helps in reducing the chance of heart attack to one third.

Tone your stomach to the way you want
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 22-Oct-2008

Getting a beautiful flat stomach is like a dream come true for every girl. But having a flat belly is not so easy. It requires lots of efforts and regular exercise. The best way to tone up your stomach muscles is with an exercise that stresses the stomach muscles directly at the front and an exercise that hits the side abs. First of all we need to understand where the fat is stored. Examine your body in the mirror.

You may notice that your actual stomach is pretty flat, but the area around your belly button still protrudes and this is where the real problem is. If this is case, your problem is your lower abdominal region more so than your stomach. Fat is stored here for a number of reasons. For some, it's genetic and that just happens to be where the body stores its fat. It may be indigestion. If your food is not digesting properly, it can cause a bulge in your lower abdominal area. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is another common cause for this problem), so get it checked out at your local GP.

tone your stomach

Sit ups and crunches are great for toning muscle, but wont get rid of the layer of fat that lies over it. You need to do some cardio exercise, such as running, to burn the fat as well. Combine the running with sit ups and crunches and you should have a flat stomach in no time!

Stem Cell Research- Pros and Cons
Pump it0 Dump it1      Posted on: 16-Feb-2009

Stem cells are special cells that can turn into many different cell types in the body such as heart muscle cells, brain cells, and skin cells.

research

There are two kinds of stem cells:

Adult Stem Cells

  • Adult Stem Cells - a supply of stem cells that can multiply when needed to repair adult organs and tissue. Adult stem cells are found in the human body and in umbilical cord blood. The most well known source of adult stem cells in the body is bone marrow but they are also found in many organs and tissues; even in the blood. Adult stem cells are more specialized since they are assigned to a specific cell family such as blood cells, nerve cells, etc.
  • Embryonic Stem Cells - cells found early (less than 2 wks.) in the development of an embryo that can progenerate a developing fetus and ultimately a human baby. Embryonic stem cells are the most versatile because they can become any cell in the body including fetal stem cells and adult stem cells.

Bruises, OUCH!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 18-Dec-2008

A bruise, also called a contusion or an ecchymosis, happens when a part of the body is struck and the muscle fibers and connective tissue underneath are crushed but the skin doesn't break. Bruises usually occur after an injury caused by blunt objects. Unexplained bruises can indicate that a child has a bleeding tendency. Blood from damaged blood vessels deep beneath the skin collects near the surface of the skin resulting in what we think of as a black and blue mark.

bruises

Home Treatment after Bruise happens:

  • Apply ice to the bruised area for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain.
  • Don't use aspirin because it may prolong the bleeding.
  • After 48 hours apply a warm washcloth for 10 minutes 3 times a day to help the skin reabsorb the blood.
  • Do not open blood blisters because it will increase the possibility of infection. The blisters will dry up and peel off in 1 to 2 weeks.
  • If the bruise takes up a large area of the leg or foot, the leg should be kept elevated as much as possible during the first 24 hours after the injury.
  • If unsure  see a health care professional.

Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 09-Jan-2009

To keep your body fit you need to exercise daily and trust me you don't need to spend an hours in gym or any other fitness center. Just few simple exercises at home can help you to tone your body. These are best especially in your busy schedule since all of these exercises will only take you around 15-20 minutes to complete.

exercise
  • Push-ups: Almost every one of you knows the concept of push-ups and in one way or another have tried it. Push-ups are good for the entire upper body, not just the chest. Make sure that you are firmly placed on the ground with a straight body. Go down in a moderate manner and make sure to push yourself up in a smooth manner, do not jerk your body up. You should increase by increments of 5 every 5-7 days of workout.

Tanning and it's different forms
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 16-Dec-2008

Tanning is the skin's reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When skin is exposed to UV rays, cells called melanocytes produce the brown pigment melanin, which darkens the cells of the epidermis. This darkening of the skin cells is the skin's natural - if imperfect - defense against further damage from UV radiation. Now a days tan skin is a fashion statement. However we must know is tanning safe for health? Let's check out what experts has to stay about this.

Different Forms of Tanning

outdoor tanning

Outdoor Tanning: Sun-tanning outdoors is obviously the most common path to getting a tan. It's natural, relatively free. To achieve a nice bronzed healthy tan, keep safe by not over doing the amount of time you spend in the sun. However this is the most uncontrolled method of tanning. Even when sunscreen is applied, no one can be sure how strong the sun's rays are on any given day and whether the right sunscreen protection level is being used.

Bottled water or tap water?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 31-May-2009

There are many diseases which are caused due to impure drinking water. So you need to be very careful while choosing drinking water. There are two modes of drinking water, Bottled water and tap water. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) oversees the bottled water industry and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) governs America's tap water. The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 first gave regulatory oversight to the EPA of public drinking water. And often times when the EPA sets new standards the FDA adopts the same policies

Teenage pregnancy, yes it can happen!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 26-Jan-2009

Teen Pregnancy refers to pregnancy in women/girls who are aged 19 and under. In the past, it was generally assumed that most teen pregnancies resulted from inadequate sex education, lack of access to contraception and sexual health services. But now it is revealed that teen pregnancy is not a simple social problem that can be fixed with appropriate educational and health messages, and that a more comprehensive approach is required. Although it is an extremely difficult situation for a teen to deal with a teenage pregnancy, current statistics reveal that approximately 10% of girls 19 and under do get pregnant.

pregnant teen

Problems of teen pregnancy.

  • Possible health risks to the pregnant teen and her growing baby
  • The ability of the teen parent to care for and support her child
  • The effect that pregnancy/parenting at a young age can have on the teen's life plan
  • The social costs of supporting young mothers and their children

To avoid teen pregnancy, every girl should take some precautions, it may sound simple but here it is explained in simple language for you to understand

  1. Make a proactive decision about whether or not you are going to engage in sexual intercourse. "It should never be something that is done to you," states Blum, who specializes in adolescent medicine.
  2. If sexual intercourse is something you choose to do, then protect yourself against the major health risks such as HIV/AIDS, STDs and pregnancy.
  3. Never assume that by "knowing" your partner that he or she is not infected. "You're likely to be wrong," Blum says, from drdonicca.com
  4. Contraception used sometimes - works sometimes. "If you are going to engage in sexual intercourse, you need to use contraception always," Blum recommends.

Cold Sores Explained
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-May-2009

Cold sores are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters or sores that appear on the lips, mouth, or nose that are caused by a virus.  Cold sores are very common and contagious too. This can't be cured or prevented completely, only steps can be taken to reduce their frequency of occurrence.

pain of cold sore

Causes:

  • This is caused by a virus herpes simplex virus (HSV).
  • The virus is spread from person to person by kissing or other close contact.
  • Infected saliva is also a means of transmitting the virus.
  • A person infected with HSV can pass it on to another person even when a cold sore is not present because the virus is sometimes shed in saliva even when sores are not present.
  • Shared eating utensils, razors and towels may spread this infection.
