Constipation in Toddlers
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 16-Nov-2009

Constipation is a very common and frustrating problem for everyone, but especially for  children. Once a child becomes constipated, he tries to hold in his bowel movements to prevent it from hurting. This creates a cycle that makes the constipation continue and become worse. Infants and children with constipation are treated differently than adults. To assist toddlers who are constipated, it is usually best to use all natural products before attempting any medication.

Constipation in Toddlers

Causes:

  • Eating less fibre like fruits, vegetable and cereals
  • Less intake of water or any liquid
  • Consuming too much milk or cheese combined with not enough high fibre foods or water
  • Less physical activity
  • A genetic disorder that affects the digestive system
  • Avoiding body's signal to have a bowel movement
  • Anxiety over toilet training

Call your doctor when your child has dry, hard stool along with:

  • blood in the stool
  • fever
  • vomiting

Help your child through natural method:

  • Decrease constipation foods like milk, yogurt, cheese, cooked carrots, and bananas. Offer water and liquid diet in good amount.
  • Change food diet; include more fruits, cooked vegetables, grain bread and cereals.
  • Offer your toddler fruit juice if he refuses to eat any fruits or vegetables.
  • Encourage your child to play and indulge in more physical activity. Exercise helps to prevent and reduce constipation.
  • Measuring three finger widths below child's navel, apply gentle, firm pressure with your fingertips for about three minutes.
  • Support child's feet when on the toilet
  • Sometimes, a toddler can get carried away playing and may ignore the signs of a bowel movement. Doing so may lead to constipation. So try to avoid this situation.
  • Don't pressurize your child for toilet training.

Baby teething
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 16-Nov-2009

Teething is a very important development in your child's body and every kid has a different experience. As a parent you have to take very good care of your child during the period of teething as the whole process is little painful for your child. The age at which the first tooth appears differs greatly from child to child. Usually, however, the first tooth - which tends to be in the middle of the lower jaw - appears at around six months of age. The complete set of 20 primary teeth (baby teeth) is usually present by the age of two-and-a-half years.

teething

How do you know your baby has started teething?

  • If you see a baby who is fussy, drooling, sticking his hand in his mouth, and you can't find any other problems, then it's probably teething.
  • In some kids you may see thin white line of a tooth poking through baby's gums with no warning signs at all.
  • Biting anything and everything
  • Tender gums
  • Teething gums may be swollen and red or even bruised.
  • Pain in the gums may travel to the ears and cheeks particularly when the back molars begin coming in. This is why you may see your baby rubbing their cheeks or pulling at their ears.
  • Not sleeping well.
  • Above symptoms followed by fever and loose stools

IVF: In vitro fertilization explained
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Nov-2009

For the couples experiencing male fertility problems or those who have been unsuccessful with less advanced treatments, IVF is often the best alternative to achieve pregnancy. IVF is simply the uniting of egg and sperm in the lab - in vitro. Subsequently the embryos are transferred into the uterus through the cervix and pregnancy is allowed to begin. IVF involves collecting eggs and sperm from you and your partner and placing them together in a laboratory dish for fertilization.

ENJOY MOTHERHOOD

Who needs IVF?

dream to be pregnant

  • If woman's fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, this can make it difficult for the egg to be fertilized or for an embryo to travel to the uterus.
  • Male factor can include a low sperm count, problems with sperm function or motility which can inhibit sperm from fertilizing an egg on its own.
  • Abnormal uterus shape, fibroid tumors, or exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) as a fetus.
  • Ovarian issues.

You must consult your doctor to know the best treatment for your infertility.

Worried about stains?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Sep-2009

Most of us worried about the stains that we get on our favorite dress as it's hard to get rid of. Here is the great news for all of us. There are many easy methods to clean different kind of stains. Getting rid of stains is possible if you act quickly and have the right gear and a little knowledge. Here we will find out how to deal with different categories of the most common stains.

Worried about stains?

Wine, coffee, tea, soft drinks, juice stains: carefully blot up any extra liquid. Then, wash with a detergent in hot water. If this doesn't work, pre treat with a stain remover and rewash. To get rid of stains that have already set, you'll undoubtedly need to break out the bleach (for whites) or heavy-duty detergent. Don't use soap as they will be made permanent.

Blood stain: Suddenly we cut our finger and thus get stain of blood on our top. You have to be very fast in dealing with blood strain. Treat the stain with a cold water and table salt mixture as soon as possible. Rinse thoroughly and blot with a towel. If the stain still persists, try diluted ammonia.

Urine, vomit, eggs, gelatin and baby food: These kind of stain is from protein. First of all dab the stain with cotton cloth to absorb the excess fluid. Then soak the stain in cold water, agitating the fabric between your fingers, and then wash with a detergent that contains enzymes. Some stains are old and stubborn, to deal with such strains try to remove excess with a dull blade and pre treat with a stain removal product or detergent that contains enzymes. Again, wash with a detergent that contains enzymes. Always remember don't use hot water or the dryer as it will set the stain permanently.

How to handle Twins
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 08-Sep-2009

Are you a parent of twins or about to become? Feeling overwhelmed with receiving double happiness in one go! True however becoming a mother means so much responsibilities and commitments, especially when it's twins everything doubles, yes even the fun. It's a challenge to be the parents of twins. Looking after twins can be very stressful to mothers however small tips can really change your life. As parents you need to involve yourself in proper time management so that your challenges and responsibilities do not overshadow a lifetime experience of love and happiness.

twins

Tips to handle twins:

  • Nursing twins: Most important thing and even a problem that arises with twins is nursing. How to feed the two babies at the same time? Just have patience and few supportive friends. Purchase a twin nursing pillow which is thicker, sturdier and can concurrently hold two babies and bring them up to your breasts don't try to bend towards them. Continuously switch sides to avoid getting blocked ducts and not getting all the milk drained from your breast, as babies feed in different styles.
  • Most it's mother's duty to look after babies. But when its twins both the partners should distribute the work and help each other to give equal attention to both the babies. However don't always stick to one particular baby, exchange your duties so that both parents get chance to be with both of the twins.

Talk to Your Child about HIV/AIDS
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Aug-2009

Raising a child is the most gratifying as well toughest job. It's the duty of responsible parents to create the awareness of all social issues among children. There are lots of complex matters all around that are difficult for children to understand and for adults to explain. Educating children about sex, HIV/AIDS is very important so that they don't get any erroneous information from wrong sources. Also look through our other AIDS article.

Here are some tips on how to start the discussion:

  • Before initiating the conversation think about the information you want to discuss with your child keeping into consideration child's age, prior knowledge and influences, as well as your own religious and cultural values. Child psychologists think that the sooner you talk about it to your child the better.

aids

  • Assemble all important and correct information about HIV/AIDS from doctors, friends and informative websites, so that you can convey accurate and correct information to your child.
  • To initiate you can use the terms like: "Have you heard about AIDS before? Well, what do you think AIDS is?" This way, you can discover what she/he already understands and work from there.
  • Be honest and frank with your child. If you are uncomfortable, they are too while discussing such topics. Share your feelings and make them comfortable so that they can easily say their doubts with you. Children's misconceptions about AIDS can be pretty scary, so it's important to correct them as soon as possible.
  • Exchange your ideas and make the conversation friendly don't make it like a lecture otherwise your child will not take any interest. Listen to what they have to say and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Discuss peer pressure, and encourage your child to use his or her own judgment when making critical decisions. Even if you don't agree with your child don't pass any judgment
  • Provide them with educational material or web sites where they can learn in private. Then discuss their experiences later.

Tips to conceive soon
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Aug-2009

Every woman's dream is to become mother and feel her baby in the lap. Motherhood is the ultimate dream role which makes a women complete. However to get pregnant is sometime very easy for few but conceiving a child can be elusive and frustrating for some. By following some tips you can conceive soon and don't have to wait long and long for your baby.

getting pregnant

Healthy Life style:

  • Both the partners should take healthy food.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Keep yourself stress free.
  • Have a good sleep.
  • Quit smoking and drinking. Also quit caffeine.
  • Take Folic acid (vitamin B-9), this plays an essential role in a baby's development. A daily prenatal vitamin or folic acid supplement beginning a few months before conception significantly reduces the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.

Knowing your Ovulation date:

1.      Menstruation cycle:

  • You must know your monthly cycle. If you have a regular 28 day cycle your ovulation occurs 14 days after the first day of menstruation (First day of your menstruation is the day 1). So you must have intercourse 2, 3 days before ovulation as egg rests in the body only for 12 - 24 hrs.
  • This method won't work if cycles are short, irregular or unpredictable.
  • If menstrual cycles are more than 28 days long but are consistent, subtract 18 from the average number of days in your cycles. On that day in the cycle is when ovulation can be expected to take place.

Motivate your child to clean their room
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Aug-2009

As responsible parents it's our duty to make our child responsible and discipline. A sense of cleanliness should be developed among children from the very childhood and one of the first steps could be motivating them to keep their room clean. Normally your child will never find interest in cleaning their room so you need to follow some simple rules to encourage them.

Motivate your child to clean their room.

Teaching your child to keep a clean room:

  • Make a fixed place for all the materials of your child's room and label them, like label a cabinet as "Toys" and place all the toys over there, explain this to your child that after playing they should keep back all the toys in its designated place.
  • Always remember child do whatever they see so you need to set an example of cleanliness by keeping the house in good order. Get the whole family involved in the cleaning process. Enjoy the time with music so that your child can take this as a part of life not as a tough work.
  • Appreciation and simple reward can really make the difference.
  • Make the cleaning process more challenging by setting a timer, turning on some lively music. Let him know that when he finishes, he can go outside and play.
  • Make a routine. Give a list of work he needs to do for the day. Encourage him to look at the list upon awakening to see what needs to be done for that day. This is a good way to help your child set goals and become more responsible.
  • Your child can't be perfect like you so don't criticize or say anything negative. Always try to appreciate.

Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 05-Aug-2009

Most of the toddlers are in the habit of sucking their fingers and thumb. As a parent you must be worried about this practice, but don't worry it's very common among children and by following some simple tips you can help your children to get rid of this habit. They suck on their fingers, clothing, and toys. From this action they learn what is pleasing and what is uncomfortable. You will find your children sucking their thumbs especially when they are tired.

Encourage your toddler to stop thumb sucking

Steps to help your child to avoid thumb sucking:

  • Don't criticize your child or never talk about your disappointment on his habit in front of him, if you do so it can irritate him and as a result he will increase thumb sucking.
  • Majorly child sucks thumb or fingers when they are bored or he has nothing to do. So try to engage him with some new toys or anything interesting that your child enjoys so that he can forget about the habit and concentrate on the activity.
  • Always keep your child happy. A happy child will never take stress which can be the reason of thumb sucking. During the phase when you are trying to free your child from this habit don't do anything which they dislike or don't want to practice.
  • Children are very fluctuating in nature. They will never listen to you during the state of stress or irritation so always select the time when they are in happy mood so that they can cooperate with you to their fullest.

Toddlers love to squeeze the soft material in their hands, exploring the texture and consistency of the dough. Older children use their imagination and make different things with the dough. It's even economical and you can prepare the play dough easily at home for your kid.

Cough and Kids
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Jun-2009

Are you also worried about the cold and cough your child is suffering from? Coughing is a very common symptom in children and usually accompanies an infection with the common cold virus. Cough can be of many types, whooping cough, dry cough, chesty cough, cough with vomiting or barky cough. However you need to understand the cause of your child's cough in order provide appropriate help and treatment.

coughHow to understand the type of cough:

  1. When your child is coughing long or cannot draw breath, possibly its whooping cough, which is caused by bacteria not virus.
  2. If your child is feeling like a tickle in the back of the throat, that symbolizes dry cough that is not in itself dangerous, but a natural and normal reaction to secretions in the respiratory tract.
  3. If there is wheezing while inhaling possibly its barky cough which is commonly brought on by a viral upper respiratory infection, or in some cases allergies.
  4. Chesty cough is due to virus can get very loud and worrisome, but they don't always signal a major infection. If your child is still eating, has energy and can sleep at night, they'll likely kick the cough in 7 to 10 days.
  5. If your child or baby has a cough, and throws up after coughing, it doesn't necessarily mean they have a more serious infection. If your child coughs violently for over 2 weeks with vomiting, can't stop coughing and can't breathe, they may have whooping cough.
