Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose, watery, soft stools with or without abdominal bloating, pressure, and cramps. Acute diarrhea is a common problem that usually lasts 1 or 2 days and goes away on its own without special treatment. Prolonged diarrhea persisting for more than 2 days may be a sign of a more serious problem and poses the risk of dehydration.

Causes:

  • Several types of bacteria may enter your body through contaminated food or water can cause diarrhea.
  • Viruses are also the cause of diarrhea.
  • Parasites may enter the body through food or water and settle in the digestive system.
  • Reaction to certain medicines can also cause diarrhea.
  • Intestinal disorders or diseasesincludinginflammatory bowel disease,irritable bowel syndrome,diverticulitis, andceliac diseasecan cause diarrhea.
  • Some people has problem digesting some food products like sweeteners and lactose (the sugar found in milk) can cause diarrhea.
  • Some people also develop diarrhea after stomach surgery or removal of the gallbladder.

Constipation generally means hard stools, difficulty passing stools however for some people it simply means infrequent stools. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. Constipation is more common in children and older age.

ConstipationThere are different types of constipation:

  • Pregnancy-related constipation
  • Chronic idiopathic constipation

Causes:

  • The most common cause of constipation is a diet low in fiber found in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and high in fats found in cheese, eggs, and meats.
  • Lack of Liquid. It is important to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of fluid a day
  • Even some medicines like pain killers can slow passage of bowel movements.
  • During pregnancy, women may be constipated because of hormonal changes or because the heavy uterus compresses the intestine.
  • People also often become constipated when travelling because their normal diet and daily routines are disrupted.
  • Ignoring the Urge to have a Bowel Movement
  • Some specific diseases that cause constipation include neurological disorders, metabolic and endocrine disorders, and systemic conditions that affect organ systems.
