    sunburn

The sea is blue and inviting, the sandy beach soft and silver. The sun is blazing down from an azure sky – everything is perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

The pale newcomers rush to get into their bikinis – they can hardly wait to feel the hot sun caressing their bodies and the warm sea water frothing over them.

But wait! Why is it so quiet? Why aren’t the local people enjoying the sun and surf as well? And yesterday, in the city, we saw so many good-looking and perfectly dressed and groomed young women. Today’s a holiday, why aren’t they having fun at the seaside too?

Well, although we can’t see them they’re here with us, but where?  Inside their condos and hotel rooms is where, waiting for that magic moment. Magic moment? What moment? The magic moment when the sun goes down, and they dare to leave the confines of their air-conditioned rooms.

But why this fear of the sun? Well, exposure to the sun gives you - horror of horrors - a suntan – and that’s what no woman wants. Why? Because a suntan means that the skin becomes dark, and no woman wants to be dark, every woman wants to be fair, fair, fair.

But all those visitors and tourists on the beach are lapping up the sun, becoming tanned and bronzed. Well, the local girls don’t want that, they want to be un-tanned, un-bronzed, because in their view anyone tanned, anyone dark or anyone black cannot be regarded as beautiful. And in their part of the world men don’t want dark women, they want fair women.

Yes, it’s a paradox seen the world over. White women want to be tanned and women born tanned or dark want to be white. Will this situation change? Well, unless sun-bathing goes out of fashion, and non-white men start looking for tanned women, it won’t!

With lots of folks spending time at the beach for the long Memorial Day weekend, it’s important to remember to protect yourself from the sun. Skin cancer is the number 1 cancer for 20-something women and according to the American Cancer Society, it has increased by a shocking 72% in New York alone during the last 10 years.

Having a sun burn doubles your chances of contracting melanoma, a kind of skin cancer. About 160,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year around the world.

    How to Prevent Skin Cancer

    • Minimize Sun Exposure – Don’t use tanning beds and try to minimize your exposure to the sun between 9am and 3pm. Use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and that has a SPF of 50 or higher. Don’t forget to use sunscreen on your face and ears!
    • Get Checked Out – Go to a certified dermatologist for a skin check at least once a year. If you have noticed any abnormal skin coloration or new moles, (especially if they have an abnormal shape or color), schedule an appointment with a dermatologist right away.
    • Get Your Endorphin Kick Elsewhere – Tanning can be addicting. Perhaps as addicting as smoking and other drugs. If you are suffering from a tanning addiction, it’s important to seek help. As with any addiction, it can also help to replace that addiction with a healthier endorphin kick such as spinning, Pilates, running, or sex. They are much better for you, and for your skin.

Tanning is the skin's reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When skin is exposed to UV rays, cells called melanocytes produce the brown pigment melanin, which darkens the cells of the epidermis. This darkening of the skin cells is the skin's natural - if imperfect - defense against further damage from UV radiation. Now a days tan skin is a fashion statement. However we must know is tanning safe for health? Let's check out what experts has to stay about this.

    Different Forms of Tanning

    outdoor tanning

Outdoor Tanning: Sun-tanning outdoors is obviously the most common path to getting a tan. It's natural, relatively free. To achieve a nice bronzed healthy tan, keep safe by not over doing the amount of time you spend in the sun. However this is the most uncontrolled method of tanning. Even when sunscreen is applied, no one can be sure how strong the sun's rays are on any given day and whether the right sunscreen protection level is being used.
