    sunburn

The sea is blue and inviting, the sandy beach soft and silver. The sun is blazing down from an azure sky – everything is perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

The pale newcomers rush to get into their bikinis – they can hardly wait to feel the hot sun caressing their bodies and the warm sea water frothing over them.

But wait! Why is it so quiet? Why aren’t the local people enjoying the sun and surf as well? And yesterday, in the city, we saw so many good-looking and perfectly dressed and groomed young women. Today’s a holiday, why aren’t they having fun at the seaside too?

Well, although we can’t see them they’re here with us, but where?  Inside their condos and hotel rooms is where, waiting for that magic moment. Magic moment? What moment? The magic moment when the sun goes down, and they dare to leave the confines of their air-conditioned rooms.

But why this fear of the sun? Well, exposure to the sun gives you - horror of horrors - a suntan – and that’s what no woman wants. Why? Because a suntan means that the skin becomes dark, and no woman wants to be dark, every woman wants to be fair, fair, fair.

But all those visitors and tourists on the beach are lapping up the sun, becoming tanned and bronzed. Well, the local girls don’t want that, they want to be un-tanned, un-bronzed, because in their view anyone tanned, anyone dark or anyone black cannot be regarded as beautiful. And in their part of the world men don’t want dark women, they want fair women.

Yes, it’s a paradox seen the world over. White women want to be tanned and women born tanned or dark want to be white. Will this situation change? Well, unless sun-bathing goes out of fashion, and non-white men start looking for tanned women, it won’t!
