Blighted Ovum - a cause of miscarriage
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Oct-2009

Have you ever faced a shocking situation when your doctor says there is no Fetus inspite of the fact that you are pregnant? Yes! You are not the single women that this has happened to; there are many women who go through same pain and depression. Blighted Ovum is the most common cause of miscarriage among women. A blighted ovum usually takes place in your first trimester, before you know that you are pregnant.

Blighted Ovum - cause of miscarriage

What is blighted ovum?

Blighted ovum possibly takes place when a full fertilized egg, which has already developed placenta and membrane, sticks to the walls of your uterus and hence there will not be any growth of embryo in your womb. You may not have any signs at all (such as pain or bleeding) that the pregnancy is not progressing normally. The pregnancy hormones in your system make you feel pregnant, though sometimes if the levels are quite low the signs of pregnancy may lessen - for instance your breasts may feel less tender.

When it occurs:

It occurs when a fertilized egg develops a placenta and membrane but no embryo - often due to chromosomal abnormalities in the fertilized egg. A blighted ovum usually occurs in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman even knows she's pregnant.

Folic Acid and its benefits
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 19-Oct-2009

Folic Acid is a kind of vitamin that belongs to the group of Vitamin B. Folic acid is known by many different names as B9, folate or folacin. This is water soluble vitamin and mainly required to form new healthy set of cells.

Food high in folic acid:

Folic Acid and its benefits:

  • Asparagus
  • Dried beans
  • Oranges
  • Whole wheat products
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Beet roots
  • Spinach
  • All green leafy vegetables

These food items provide adequate amount of folic acid to fill out vitamin deficiencies and the problems related to it.

Folic acid and pregnancy: Folic acid and healthy pregnancy are very much interrelated. Folic acid is a great energy booster and it also increases the production of the red blood cells. When folic acid is consumed prior to conception, it proves very vital in preventing many serious birth defects. Consumption of folic acid three months prior to pregnancy has proved significant in maintaining the health of the infants as well as the mother. It also increases breast milk. Folic acid can also reduce the rate of heart defects in the infants. Healthy diet containing foods rich in folic acid actually lowers the risk of stillbirth and premature births.

Teenage pregnancy, yes it can happen!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 26-Jan-2009

Teen Pregnancy refers to pregnancy in women/girls who are aged 19 and under. In the past, it was generally assumed that most teen pregnancies resulted from inadequate sex education, lack of access to contraception and sexual health services. But now it is revealed that teen pregnancy is not a simple social problem that can be fixed with appropriate educational and health messages, and that a more comprehensive approach is required. Although it is an extremely difficult situation for a teen to deal with a teenage pregnancy, current statistics reveal that approximately 10% of girls 19 and under do get pregnant.

Problems of teen pregnancy.

  • Possible health risks to the pregnant teen and her growing baby
  • The ability of the teen parent to care for and support her child
  • The effect that pregnancy/parenting at a young age can have on the teen's life plan
  • The social costs of supporting young mothers and their children

To avoid teen pregnancy, every girl should take some precautions, it may sound simple but here it is explained in simple language for you to understand

  1. Make a proactive decision about whether or not you are going to engage in sexual intercourse. "It should never be something that is done to you," states Blum, who specializes in adolescent medicine.
  2. If sexual intercourse is something you choose to do, then protect yourself against the major health risks such as HIV/AIDS, STDs and pregnancy.
  3. Never assume that by "knowing" your partner that he or she is not infected. "You're likely to be wrong," Blum says, from drdonicca.com
  4. Contraception used sometimes - works sometimes. "If you are going to engage in sexual intercourse, you need to use contraception always," Blum recommends.

Chickenpox - Just take the precautions
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 28-Dec-2008

Chickenpox (varicella) is a common, preventable childhood infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. An itchy rash of spots that look like blisters can appear all over the body and may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms. Chickenpox is very dangerous for people with immune system problems like leukemia, or for people who are taking drugs that weaken the immune system.  This is a very uncomfortable situation for your child. Chickenpox usually occurs in late winter and early spring.

Reflux - an uncomfortable condition
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 12-Dec-2008

Reflux is the word used to describe what happens when the stomach contents come back up into the gullet or even into the mouth. The medical name for gullet is oesophagus (spelt esophagus in the US). So the long name for reflux is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Short Terms is GORD in the UK and GERD in the States. The lining of the stomach protects the stomach from the effects of its own acids. Because the esophagus lacks a similar protective lining, stomach acid that flows backward (refluxes) into it causes heartburn (also called dyspepsia). Many people experience heartburn occasionally; however, people who get severe heartburn several times a week are considered to have GERD. The condition affects 29% of people in Canada.

GERDfeeling heart burn

Causes of GERD: GERD occurs when the sphincter, a valve that normally keeps acid in the stomach, isn't functioning properly. Food that causes GERD include:

avoid food that produces acid

  • alcoholic drinks
  • chocolate
  • coffee, tea, cola
  • foods with high acid content (e.g., tomatoes, orange juice)
  • fried or fatty foods
  • garlic
  • onions
  • peppermint
  • spicy foods

The painful truth about Fistula
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 10-Oct-2008

I recently read the book The Hospital By The River by Catherine Hamlin and l was left stunned. The book is about a hospital in Ethiopia called the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital which does surgery helping women who from long, obstructed labor suffer complicated fistulas that cause them to constantly leak urine or stool. They are then abused by their husbands and family and even abandoned. So what is fistula?

The Hospital By The River by Catherine Hamlin

Fistula is an abnormal passageway in the body. The fistula may go from the body surface into a blind pouch or into an internal organ or go between two internal organs. There are numerous types of fistula.

Be fit after Pregnancy, its hard but its worth it!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 30-Sep-2008

In the midst of joy of having a baby mothers mostly ignore their fitness. Have you ever look into the mirror and saw your figure after pregnancy which you have maintained always by lots of hard efforts and exercises. Fortunately, there are some simple exercises that you can do to quickly reduce and eliminate this abdominal fat and keep your stomach looking good.

mother with new born

When should you start?

If you had a vaginal birth, you can start most regular activities again as soon as you feel comfortable. After a cesarean birth, exercise can be started when you're comfortable and have discussed your exercise plans with a physiotherapist, doctor or other health practitioner. Start slowly, and then gradually build up the length of exercise. If you have heavier and brighter bleeding after exercise, you need to slow down. If you feel pain while exercising, stop and rest.

Help me with my Varicous Veins
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 29-Apr-2008
They can be not only be a ghastly thing to look at but they can also hurt especially at the end of the day.

So what are Varicose Veins and what we can do to reduce their severity?

Lets first look at veins. Veins are blood vessels that return deoxygenated blood from the outer parts of the body back to the heart and lungs. When veins become abnormally thick, full of twists or even enlarged, they are called varicose veins.

  • * The thickened, twisting or dilated parts of the vein are called varicosities.
  • * Varicose veins can form anywhere in the body, but they are most often located in the legs.
  • * In the United States, about 19% of men and 36% of women have varicose veins.
  • * Varicose veins tend to be inherited and become more prominent as the person ages.

Ouch, Stretch Marks!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Apr-2008

Stretch marks or striae are a form of scarring on the skin with a silvery white appearance. They are caused by tearing of the skin and over time can fade but unfortunately not disappear completely. Stretch marks are because of the rapid stretching of the skin seen with rapid growth like that noted in puberty or weight gain especially during pregnancy. Stretch marks can also been seen on obese people, and can develop during rapid muscle growth from regular exercise.

Even pregnant celebs get them, here is a pic of Katie Holmes.
