Have you had your milk today? No, I’m not talking to you, children, I’m talking to you, adults!

But why should I drink milk? I thought that milk was only for babies and small kids. No, milk is essential for everyone.

    Milk Contains Essential Nutrients

Why? Well, do you know that a single glass of milk contains no less than fifteen different nutrients, the most important of which is calcium, and it’s calcium that gives you strong bones and teeth. And the other nutrients include proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins A and D, magnesium, thiamin, zinc, phosphorus, niacin, folic acid, riboflavin,  and vitamins B6 and 12.

Of course, most people consume some milk on a daily basis, often without really noticing it, as milk has become a staple of the diet. What would we do without milk for tea or coffee, breakfast cereals, for cooking, or just as a nice drink? But sometimes what we drink as milk is not really milk – it’s some form of imitation milk made from palm oil and other agricultural and synthetic products.

So the best thing to do is to stick to genuine milk, which is generally available in four categories, pasteurized, UHT, homogenized, and sterilized.

    • Pasteurized - milk which has been heated to kill any harmful bacteria and extend shelf life
    • UHT - milk treated using ultra high temperatures which allows no refrigeration and the milk to be kept fresh until the package is opened
    • Homogenized - keeps natural fat from separating from the rest of the milk so that it keeps its nutrients
    • Sterilized - milk heated to 150 degrees Celsius which allows it to be kept for several months

So when buying milk you have several options, and you can choose depending on your particular requirements. But always check the expiry date before buying and keep in mind the type of milk you have bought.
