A certain type of Chinese mindfulness meditation has been shown the cause physical changes in the brain. Scientists believe that these changes may help to improve or even prevent mental illness.

In contrast to many meditation techniques, which require the practitioner to let go of their thoughts and mindfulness while slipping into a meditative trance, this body-mind integrative technique from China emphasizes awareness of not only the body and mind, but also the environment.

After 1 month of practicing this type of meditation regularly, participants in a study at the University of Oregon reported better moods after meditation practice. MRI imaging also showed that participants had an increase in myelin (protective tissue in the brain) as well as an increase in signaling connections in the brain.

The researchers concluded that the changes in the brain found in the study, “could provide a means for intervention to improve or prevent mental disorders.”

The actual type of meditation practice used in the study is called integrative body-mind training or IBMT and it has been adapted from Traditional Chinese Medicine, starting in the 1990’s. The name, Namaste yoga, is derived from a popular Indian salutation. Namaste means: I bow to you. It is a kind of regards which we show to others with our hands together in a steeple posture and bowing at the same time, this type of position is generally practiced in the beginning and at the end of yoga class and the words "Namaste" is said while practicing the yoga. One can do Namaste to oneself as a meditation technique to go deeper inside the heart chakra; when done with someone else, it is also a beautiful, albeit quick, meditation. Namaste yoga is just one of the many different types of yoga that you can choose to participate in.

Chakras are our energy centers. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura and the word 'chakra' is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning 'wheel'. These energy wheels regulate the flow of energy through our energy system. These centers open and close when we decide what to think and  feel. Their function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. They are associated with our physical, mental and emotional interactions. Chakras and their functions were first mentioned in the Vedas, ancient Hindu texts of knowledge.

Seven Chakras: The human body has seven chakras - energy locations which can be blocked, healed, and even seen by some.

Root Chakra - Red: The root chakra is the chakra located at your perineum, at the bottom of your spine. The root chakra is represented by the first color of the rainbow - red. If this chakra is unhealthy, it can cause you to be greedy, feel needy, or unappreciative of what you do have. It can cause you to neglect the steps necessary to maintain your environment. To strengthen your root chakra, focus on the color red, which is found in ruby and garnet gemstones.
