Do you donate blood?
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 19-Jun-2009

Every year millions of people die due to lack of blood, because it is said that every three seconds someone needs blood. This proves the importance of blood donation. There are lots of myths about blood donation like a vegetarian can't donate blood as their blood does not have enough iron. But these kinds of myths are not true. Anyone up to the age of 60 who is fit and healthy can give blood. But remember if you are pregnant or breast feeding you can't give blood, you need it for yourself and your baby, lol! donate blood

You must know there are many advantages of blood donation, let's check out..

  • Due to blood donation the count of blood cells decreases in our body, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce new red blood cells in order to replenish the loss. This helps to stimulate the production of new blood cells and refreshes the system.
  • Blood donation is an excellent way to get rid of excess iron accumulated in our body due to its overconsumption. Excessive of iron causes Hemochromitosis, a genetic disorder. This condition may lead to organ damage.
  •  Blood donation helps to alleviate some major health problems like heart diseases. It has been observed that increase in blood iron level increases the chance of heart disease. Increases blood iron level favors this process of cholesterol oxidation and thus leads to heart disease. Regular blood donation helps especially males in loosing iron on regular basis. It helps in reducing the chance of heart attack to one third.

AIDS - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 02-May-2009

aidsAIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, "Acquired" means you can get infected with it, "Immune Deficiency" means a weakness in the body's system that fights diseases and "Syndrome" means a group of health problems that make up a disease. AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. People who have the HIV antibodies are called "HIV-Positive." Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don't get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don't cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. These are called "opportunistic infections."

Ouch....sore throats
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 04-Mar-2009

A sore throat - known medically as pharyngitis - is most often caused by a viral infection such as a cold or the flu (influenza). In many cases, a sore throat is the first sign that you're getting sick. In most cases, a sore throat is caused by a virus that soon goes away on its own. A sore throat is rarely caused by a bacterial infection that requires medical care or treatment with antibiotics.

sore throatCauses:

  • Common viruses.
  • Breathing through the mouth can produce throat dryness and soreness.
  • Post nasal drip may cause a sore throat.
  • A sore throat can also be caused by bacteria.

Any sore throat that causes you to have difficulty swallowing (not just pain with swallowing) or breathing should be seen by a health care professional.

Complications: Strep throat, a bacterial infection, can trigger other conditions that include:

  • Tonsillitis
  • Sinus infection (sinusitis)
  • Ear infection
  • Scarlet fever, an illness characterized by a rash
  • Inflammation of the kidney.

Migraine - kind of a headache
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 24-Jan-2009

A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache and it is a complex disorder involving the brain and the blood vessels around the brain and head. Migraine headaches seem to be caused in part by changes in the level of a body chemical called serotonin. The pain of a migraine headache can be intense, getting in the way of your daily activities. In some cases, these painful headaches are preceded or accompanied by a sensory warning sign, such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. Migraines aren't the same in all people. Up to 17% of women and 6% of men have experienced a migraine and l must say l am one of them. When l was pregnant l had a migraine where l thought l was going to die, but luckily it subsided and here l am!

headache

Types of Migraine:

  • Migraines or classic migraines start with a set of warning signs are called the aura.
The aura often involves changes in the way you see. You may see flashing lights. You may temporarily lose some of your vision, such as your side vision, in one or both eyes.
  • Migraines without aura or common migraines don't start with an aura. Migraines without aura may start more slowly than migraines with aura, last longer and interfere more with daily activities. The pain of migraines without aura may be on just one side of your head. If you have severe headaches without an aura that don't seem to be caused by muscle tension, they may be migraines without aura.

Alzheimer's: A Debilitating Disease
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 21-Nov-2008

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder. It is the most common form of dementia, and this terminal, progressive brain disorder has no known cause or cure. Vascular dementia, another common type of dementia, is caused by reduced blood flow to parts of the brain.

learn about AD

In mixed dementia, Alzheimer's and vascular dementia occur together. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time. Alzheimer's Disease Research (ADR), a program of the American Health Assistance Foundation, seeks to avert this tidal wave by funding research to find a cure. As many as 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease! What a huge number.

The Endocrine System- it's very complicated!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 10-Nov-2008

The endocrine system is one of the body's main systems for communicating, controlling and coordinating the body's work. The foundations of the endocrine system are the hormones and glands. A gland is a group of cells that produces and secretes, or gives off, chemicals. "Hormone" means to "excite" or "spur on" and that's exactly what hormones do.

It works with the nervous system, reproductive system, kidneys, gut, liver, pancreas and fat to help maintain and control the following:

  • body energy levels
  • reproduction
  • growth and development
  • internal balance of body systems, called homeostasis
  • responses to surroundings, stress and injury
