Tennis, a great sport
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 07-Sep-2009

The game of Tennis came into existence several thousand years ago. Tennis is a sport played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). A strung racquet is used to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent's court.

Tennis

History: The game was first created by European monks to be played for entertainment purposes during religious ceremonies. Initially the ball was hit with the hand. Then leather glove came into existence. Later on for effective hitting and serving of the ball an adaptive handle was used. Thus, racquet came into existence. After the evolution of the racket, the tennis balls also underwent frequent alterations. The first tennis ball was wooden. It gave way to a bouncier, leather ball filled with cellulose material. With time game became famous in France especially among royal family. Between 16th and 18th centuries, the game called ' Jeu de paumme' - the game of the palm was a highly regarded by kings and noblemen.  In 1874, Major Walter Wingfield acquired the patent rights for the equipments and rules for the game which bore close resemblance to the modern tennis. First tennis courts emerged in the United States in the same year. The game slowly extended to different parts of the world like Russia, Canada, China and India.

Fencing - A great sport
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 27-Aug-2009

The term "fencing" originates from the self-defense skill of swordsmanship. In the 17th century, fencing changed from a crucial self-defense technique to a widely practiced martial art that had fans watching the sport in an arena. Fencing is one of the few sports to have acknowledged professionals prior to the 1980s. Fencing was an Olympic sport for the first time in 1896.

Levels of Fencing: The sport of fencing features three different levels, which are categorized by the type of weapon used in each level.

  • Foil: Foil is a light, thrusting weapon. In foil fencing, touches are scored with the tip of the blade.
  • Epee: the Epee is the heaviest fencing sword. In epee, points are also scored with the tip of the blade.
  • Sabre: The Sabre is designed for both thrusts and cuts. In saber fencing, points can be scored with the tip or the sides of the blade.

Getting Ready for Summer
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 21-Jul-2009

Get ready to hit the pool and beaches this summer! Winter has already said good bye and summer is just about to approach with lots of fun and relaxation.  Well for some of us, because for others like me we need to think abut how we are going to look good (or at least Ok) in a bathing suit.  Winter has left many of us lethargic, due to those days and nights of extra eating. But, as we know summer is all about beaches and poosl, and that's synonymous to shorts, small tops, and bikinis. So lets get into shape and the only way is through hard work. Start a workout and diet plan today and lose those extra pounds that are creating a barrier in the path of your enjoyment.

Let's focus on some of the easy workouts that can help you lose those extra pounds:

Pilates is a low impact workout that anyone can do and here are some simple exercises you can do at home.

The hundred, this is a start up exercise:

  1. Bring your legs to 'table top,' which immediately pushes on your core.
  2. Peel your head, neck and shoulders up and raise your arms next to you about hip height.
  3. Pump your arms up and down, inhaling for five counts and then exhaling for five counts for a series of one hundred pumps in total.

Roll up:

  1.  Lay flat on your back with your knees pulled in and feet on the floor.
  2. Begin a series of roll ups.
  3. Inhale, then exhale as you lift your head up over your chest, your chest and mid section up off the floor, and sit up nice and tall with your arms stretched out in front of you the entire time.
  4. Inhale again, and then exhale as you pull your tummy in and slowly lie back down on your back, rolling down one vertebra at a time until your head is resting on the floor and your arms are back at your side.
  5. Do this five to six times. You may have to use your hands to help pull yourself up the first few times, but when you become a pro there is no stopping you.

Sure Maximum Protection

Those of you who refrain from throwing your hands in the air and waving them like you just don't care, for fear of unsightly sweat stains and body odour, might be pleased to know that there are a handful of solutions on the horizon!

Whilst investing in a great deodorant is half the battle, the other is to ensure you are wearing the right gear.  You cannot simply turn up in a baggy old t-shirt and think your exercise experience will be maximised to its full potential. Thankfully, several of the major sports brands have recognised that if you are slogging it out at the gym preparing to train for your first or hundredth marathon, you are more productive when you feel fresh.

The Puma Advanced collection offers lightweight, highly functioning compression technology, for ultimate support and comfort, in addition to UV protection. The best bit, which makes even the laziest among us tempted to partake in a little cardio, is that the wicking system rapidly moves moisture away from the skin and optimises body temperature. The Short Sleeve Black Top costs £30 and the Short Black Tights costs £25, making this a worthwhile investment for any amateur or professional sportsperson. Back pain - ouch!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 25-Feb-2009

Most of us have faced minor back problems at one time or another. For example, we often experience an increase in lower back pain when bending, walking, sitting, or standing too long in one position. Back pain is extremely common - about eight in 10 people in the UK are affected at some time in their lives. To begin on the positive side, patients must understand that most episodes of back pain resolve, and usually within a few weeks. Unfortunately, back pain can be among the most difficult and frustrating problems for patients and their doctors. Back pain can affect anyone at any age, but it's most common in people between the ages of 35 and 55.

back pain

Causes of Back Pain: You're more likely to develop simple back pain if you:

  • Stand, sit or bend down for long periods
  • Muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain.
  • Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population. As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions.
  • Lift, carry, push or pull loads that are too heavy, or if you go about these tasks in the wrong way
  • Have a trip or a fall
  • Are stressed or anxious
  • Are overweight

Drinking Water while your eating is a Big No No!
Pump it0 Dump it1      Posted on: 01-Feb-2009

It's very common that people drink water between their meals but research has said that a small amount of liquid during meals should be okay but drinking a lot of water, juice, or soda can cause digestion problems. Drinking water and other fluids can cause dilution of stomach acids and digestive enzymes, making them less effective at breaking down food. Whenever possible, it is best to drink fluids before and two hours after meals as this helps uptake of nutrients and move bowels. Reducing the amount of salt and spices added to foods is helpful in reducing the need to drink fluids with meals.

drinking while eating

Effects of Drinking water during meal:

  • Liquids taken during meals can dilute digestive enzymes and stomach acids and these are essential to break down the food and absorb nutrients. As it's harder to break down the food, the stomach may produce more acids, which could result in heartburn or acid reflux. This could possible put more pressure on the small intestines as well because the food is passed along from the stomach without being broken enough.

Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 09-Jan-2009

These are best especially in your busy schedule since all of these exercises will only take you around 15-20 minutes to complete.

exercise
  • Push-ups: Almost every one of you knows the concept of push-ups and in one way or another have tried it. Push-ups are good for the entire upper body, not just the chest. Make sure that you are firmly placed on the ground with a straight body. Go down in a moderate manner and make sure to push yourself up in a smooth manner, do not jerk your body up. You should increase by increments of 5 every 5-7 days of workout.

Obesity among children - Oops!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 20-Dec-2008

It's not "cool" to be fat, still obesity epidemic is increasing with passing years especially among children. Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat. Obesity is present when total body weight is more than 25 percent fat in boys and more than 32 percent fat in girls. Childhood obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to about 13 percent in 1994. Today, it is about 20 percent - and rising. According to American Obesity Association, 2006, approximately 30.3% of children (ages 6 to 11) are overweight and 15.3% are obese. For teens (12 to 19) the rate is almost identical: 33.4% overweight, and 15.5% obese. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. Now these are alarming figures.

We work out long ours for a healthy body and beautiful shape however often forget the most important part of our body that controls the entire body function. Yes you are right I am talking about our brain. We must do some regular exercises to keep our brain sharp. Exercise increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. And exercise seems to slow the loss of brain tissue that typically begins in your 40s. Normal aging processes can make it difficult to recall certain facts. Studies have found that exercise seems to delay or sometimes prevent these specific aging-related changes in your brain. It may even help in memory improvement.

Tone your stomach to the way you want
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 22-Oct-2008

Getting a beautiful flat stomach is like a dream come true for every girl. But having a flat belly is not so easy. It requires lots of efforts and regular exercise. The best way to tone up your stomach muscles is with an exercise that stresses the stomach muscles directly at the front and an exercise that hits the side abs. First of all we need to understand where the fat is stored. Examine your body in the mirror.

You may notice that your actual stomach is pretty flat, but the area around your belly button still protrudes and this is where the real problem is. If this is case, your problem is your lower abdominal region more so than your stomach. Fat is stored here for a number of reasons. For some, it's genetic and that just happens to be where the body stores its fat. It may be indigestion. If your food is not digesting properly, it can cause a bulge in your lower abdominal area. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is another common cause for this problem), so get it checked out at your local GP.

tone your stomach

Sit ups and crunches are great for toning muscle, but wont get rid of the layer of fat that lies over it. You need to do some cardio exercise, such as running, to burn the fat as well. Combine the running with sit ups and crunches and you should have a flat stomach in no time!
