Facts about Head Lice
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 19-Oct-2009

Head Lice are small parasitic insects which are most commonly found living on the scalp and neck. This is a matter of frustration for most of the parents as this is most common in young children. Head lice are most commonly spread by direct head-to-head contact. Head Lice is highly contagious and can easily be spread by sharing hygiene items such as a comb or hairbrush. The only relief is that Lice aren't dangerous and they don't spread disease. However, their bites may cause a child's scalp to become itchy and inflamed, and persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation and even infection.

Along with studies, playing some sports is also very important for the proper mental and physical growth of your child. Mostly kids are watching television or playing computer games. These activities tend to keep them indoors and do not provide the opportunity to mix with children of their own age. So playing outside is very significant. You have a list of sports to choose but Soccer is the best. Soccer also known as football in Europe is a great outdoor activity for kids.  Let's check out its benefits.

Epilepsy Seizure disorder explained
Pump it1 Dump it0      Posted on: 04-Jun-2009

Epilepsy is a kind of brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally. More than 2 million people in the United States about 1 in 100 have experienced an unprovoked seizure or been diagnosed with epilepsy. Brain is a highly complex electrical system, powered by roughly 80 pulses of energy per second. These pulses move back and forth between nerve cells to produce thoughts, feelings, and memories. An epileptic seizure occurs when these energy pulses come much more rapidly-as many as 500 per second for a short time-due to an electrical abnormality in the brain. Any kind of changes in the brain is known as epileptic seizure. Epilepsy is not contagious.

epilepsy disorderCauses:

  • Epilepsy may develop because of an abnormality in brain wiring, an imbalance of nerve signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters, or some combination of these factors.
  • In some cases, the brain's attempts to repair itself after a head injury, stroke, or other problem may inadvertently generate abnormal nerve connections that lead to epilepsy.
  • Research suggests that genetic abnormalities may be some of the most important factors contributing to epilepsy.
  • Epilepsy develops as a result of brain damage from other disorders like brain tumors, alcoholism, and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Seizures can result from exposure to lead, carbon monoxide, and many other poisons.

Obesity among children - Oops!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 20-Dec-2008

It's not "cool" to be fat, still obesity epidemic is increasing with passing years especially among children. Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat. Obesity is present when total body weight is more than 25 percent fat in boys and more than 32 percent fat in girls. Childhood obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to about 13 percent in 1994. Today, it is about 20 percent - and rising. According to American Obesity Association, 2006, approximately 30.3% of children (ages 6 to 11) are overweight and 15.3% are obese. For teens (12 to 19) the rate is almost identical: 33.4% overweight, and 15.5% obese. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. Now these are alarming figures.
