Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 16-Nov-2008

As you sip your red wine, do you know where it's color comes from? It's produced from a vast assortment of grape varietals ranging from grapes that are reddish, deep purple, and even a beautiful blue. Many people consider red wines "heavy" wines, but they are more accurately described as being "light-bodied" or "full-bodied." The body is the texture and the weight that you will feel in your mouth and on your tongue when you drink the wine. So lets dicuss the varieties of Red Wines available for you to enjoy!

enjoy red wine

Merlot: The classic Merlot grape originated from the Bordeaux region of France. It produces a soft, medium-bodied red wine with juicy fruit flavors. The softness of Merlot has made it an "introducing" wine for new red-wine drinkers. A range of fresh flavors such as plums, cherries, blueberries and blackberries mixed with black pepper tones, typically dominate this smooth red wine. Merlot is often used to blend with other varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. By blending Merlot with these wines, a distinct taste is produced for you to take pleasure in.

Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 13-Nov-2008

Every wine lover knows about the elegant fragrance and color of White Wine. We all know most wines are made out of grape juice that is being fermented. After fermentation, the resulting wine is clear in color. This clear wine is called white wine. White wines are made from the grape juice and grape skin of green, gold or yellowish colored grapes or from just the juice (not the skin) of select red grapes (as in some Champagnes). There are many varieties of white wine available in the market. White wine is especially known for it's use in so many food recipes that provides a fabulous aroma and taste to the food.

Sweet wines, your pairing with desserts!
Pump it0 Dump it0      Posted on: 11-Nov-2008

With so many different types of sweet wines that you can pair up with a dessert, or sip on its own after dinner. Sweet wines range from the fresh and fruity to the syrupy and sticky - so how do you choose the right wine? The fresher, sweet styles are made from grapes that have been left on the vine for longer to ripen to higher sugar levels. You may be familiar with the word spatlese on such wines. It's German for 'late-harvested'. These wines are as sweet as really ripe, fresh fruit and go well with something like a juicy peach.

If the grapes are left on the vine for a little longer, they can be infected by a kind of mould (oh, is that what it is???) called botrytis, or 'noble rot', which shrivels the berries and makes for a sweeter wine. The two most common grape varieties are riesling and semillon. Botrytis-affected riesling tends to be very sweet but zesty, while Botrytis semillon are richer, softer and fuller-flavoured. The sweetest wines of all are the fortifieds- muscat, tokay and port - with the word 'liqueur' on the label.

So, now that you know all this you can enjoy your wine with dessert too! Hooray.
