Fall may have only officially started this past Saturday but I can already feel my skin starting to change from the weather.

Just because you’re no longer out in the hot sun of summer, that doesn’t mean you should suddenly forget your skin. Skincare is just as important during the fall and winter as it is during spring and summer.

Don’t Forget the SPF! You may be wearing long sleeve shirts and pants rather than a bikini but it’s still important to protect your skin with sunscreen when you’re going to be outdoors. The sun’s rays may not feel as hot but they can still cause a lot of damage and even lead to skin cancer. Opt for a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 with UVA and UVB protection.

Beyond Sunscreen - Dread the thought of lathering up in sticky sunscreen? Don’t worry! Many lighter lotions, makeup products and even baby powder now also offer SPF protection. For better protection, use more than one product with an SPF of 15 or more. For example, before putting on your 15+ SPF foundation, also use a facial moisturizer with SPF.

Road Trip Protection - Fall is a great time for road trips. Whether you’re heading out to enjoy the colors of the changing leaves or driving to the state fair with the fam, make sure that your skin is protected while in the car just as you would while outside. Some windshields block UVB but the majority do not protect you from UVA. Side and rear windows may not protect you from either UVB or UVA. For the best protection, have all windows in your car tinted with UVA/UVB films AND wear some type of sunscreen while in the car.

Eye Protection – Not all sunglasses are created equal. In order to protect the very sensitive skin around your eyes and your actual eyes from damage, make sure that your sunglasses block UV rays 100%. Also use lotion specifically formulated for use around the eyes that has at least SPF 15 and offers protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Chic Sun Protection – Although still relatively uncommon in the States, many women in other countries, particularly throughout Asia, use umbrellas for more than just rainstorms. An umbrella or parasol can help provide added protection from the sun and the right one can also be a great fashion accessory.

Beyond sun protection, it’s also important to keep your skin properly moisturized this fall. Choose a body wash or bar of soap that is moisturizing and follow your bath or shower with a quality lotion. Reapply your moisturizer as needed throughout the day. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated to help ensure that your skin has a healthy glow this fall.
