  • Urban Outfitters - Offending People With Fashion

    Urban Outfitters is in the news again this week after their "Wood Wood Kellog Tee" was attacked by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in Philly. The shirt has a star-like symbol on the pocket, as shown above from the company's website. The ADL has stated that the design copies the Star of David patches that the Jewish people were forced to wear by the Nazis during the holocaust.

    In a message to the Chairman, President, and CEO of Urban Outfitters, the ADL Regional Director, Barry Morrison, stated, "We find this use of symbolism to be extremely distasteful and offensive, and are outraged that your company would make this product available to your customers."

    Urban Outfitters have long been a topic of fashion controversy.
     
    Here's a quick rundown on some of the people they've offended over the years:

    • Conservatives - A picture in a previous catalog which featured their Kaleidoscope Dress Collection depicted two women kissing. 
    • People of African Decent - Their BDG Burnout Henley tee offered the color option of "Obama / Black."
    • Irish People - With a variety of verbal tees such as "Irish I Were Drunk," and "Kiss Me, I'm Drunk, Or Irish, Or Whatever," and an "Irish Yoga" trucker hat which depicted the outline of a person doing the "yoga" move of being down on all fours and vomiting.
    • People with eating disorders - With a women's tee which read, "Eat Less."
    • Transgendered people - With their "Tranny" greeting card.

    Their books, cards, and other accessories have also been known to border on the offensive-to-someone-somewhere side of things. With this latest controversy, the main question is…

    What it Really a Star of David?

    WoodWood, creators of the tee, responded, "The graphic is not the Star of David, and I can assure you that this is in no way a reference to Judaism, Nazism or the Holocaust."

    We will probably never know with 100% clarity what the intent was of the original design. Regardless, the "Wood Wood Kellog Tee" is available on the Urban Outfitters website for $100, and it's current incarnation is star and patch free.

As you may alreday know, Etsy is an e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items as well as art and craft supplies.To help make sure you get the highest quality and the best deal on your Spring raincoat and other shopping, here are few tips for Etsy shopping:
     
    Etsy Shopping Basics
    • Never be afraid to ask questions - If the shop's description of an item leaves a bit too much to the imagination, don't hesitate to ask questions. Simply click on the "Contact" button on any page of the shop to open a message window.
    • Read thoroughly - Also be sure that you are reading whatever description is provided thoroughly. Some listings are for custom, made-to-order pieces similar to those pictured, other listings are for the exact piece show in the photos. 
    • Be unique - As all of the items on Etsy are handmade, many of the shops are willing (and often delighted) to do custom orders. If the color or size you are looking for aren't listed in a shop, contact them to ask if they could make one especially for you.
    • Play by the book - Before you order, be sure to read the shop's policies to find out the specifics about shipments, custom orders, and their return policy. You can click on the "View shop policies" link at the bottom of each listing (just below the shipping costs) or on the "Policies" link under "Shop Info" on the main page of the shop. 
    Now that you have a firm grasp of the basics of shopping on Etsy, let's dive in to raincoats…
     
    Shopping for Raincoats
    1. Search for it! Use the search bar at the top of the page to search for "raincoat" and the autofill feature will bring up a variety of options including "childrens raincoats," "dog raincoat," "womens raincoat" and more. You can select one of the autofill search terms or go with your own.
    2. Vintage or Handmade? Next to the search box, you can click the drop-down menu on the left to narrow your search to vintage items, handmade items, or to search for a specific shop. You can also select "All items" in order to search for raincoats in all shops.
    3. Double Check - Once you have narrowed down your search and found a few raincoats you absolutely adore, be sure to check sizing and shipping information. If shipping times are not listing on the item page or in the shop policies, contact the shop to ask how long the item will take to arrive. If it is a custom item, make sure you allow enough time for the piece to be made as well. 
    Once your item has arrived, be sure to let the shop owner know if you have any problems whatsoever with the piece.     Not that there's anything innately wrong with floral in and of itself. Floral, when used appropriately can be fun and feminine.     Shopping for clothes, accessories and makeup is the favorite hobby of women of all age groups. Mostly you will find bunch of us shopping in malls, for days on end trying to find that "thing". But do we really need someone every time to help us for choosing the latest fashion?  Like every situation there are both advantages and disadvantages in shopping with friends.  Lets see, there are many advantages of shopping with friends.

    We all know how it is at some stage during the shopping expedition we get confused. There are so many things and it's really difficult to choose the best among them. In this situation you need second opinion and being alone is a big disadvantage.  Which one makes me look skinner? Does my bottom look ok in this one? Do my arms look flabby? So many questions...the list is endless. Each one of us has a different body shape and so our clothes need to be selected to suit our body types. When you are alone there is no one to suggest you what's suit you the best.  It's fun to shop with friends; you get to gossip, and have lunch together, what's better than that? Also, if your friend has a good knowledge about fashion trends, she can be an extra great partner. 

    There are only two advantages of shopping alone that l can think of and they are; you can be the best judge especially if you have a jealous friend and there is no one to distract you, you can look for correct size, rather than acting like a size zero! But, with that said if you have the right girlfriends, l think shopping with them is the best as you get a companion, an honest opinion, and someone to gossip with. So what are you waiting for?
