There are many flat irons available in the market. They range in price, material and even color. There are a number of things that you need consider before buying one. For example is it ceramic? Can you use it on damp and dry hair? Is it sturdy, light weight and ergonomically designed? How about anti-frizz? What about the plate size on the iron?
According to everything I have read, ceramic is the way to go, as they diffuse heat better and result in less damage to your hair.
The plate size depends on your hair texture and hair length. The following table, that l found on folica.com explains this in detail:
|
Texture |
Hair Length |
Recommended Plate Size |
|
Very coarse, thick, curly |
Long (below shoulder) |
1.5 to 3 inch |
|

Any length |
1 to 1.5 inch |
If you have natural straight hair and you just want to smooth or de-frizz, choose small ones (1 to 1.5 inch). Small sizes are also recommended for hair that's already chemically straightened. Small sizes are lighter, easier to use and more versatile while bigger ones work faster and save time with long coarse hair, but they are not as user-friendly and generally on the heavy side. The most popular sizes are 1-1/4" and 1-1/2 inch as mentioned by folica.com
What about the temperature of the iron? Different hair texture requires different temperatures and it is always worth buying one that has temperature control. At Folica Product Testing Lab they tested various hair texture and they found the following:
|
Texture |
Recommended Temperature |
|
Normal Hair |
360-380 oF (180oC - 190oC Celsius) |
|
Very coarse, thick, curly or ethnic hair |
380-410 oF (190oC - 210oC Celsius) |
|
Bleached, fragile, damaged or fine hair |
Below 360oF (180oC Celsius) |
There are many sites on the net that review the irons for you. I think it is worth taking a look at these before you go out and but one, flatironreview.com is a great site to look through.
Also remember to unplug the iron right after use, to make it last longer. There are some irons you can buy that have an automatic turn off mechanism if you forget it on, which is great. Also do not wrap power cords around the iron, if you want it to last longer.
Now all that is left to say is happy straightening and curling!
