President Barack Obama promised to tap the virtues and resiliency of Americans and in his inaugural address Tuesday, Obama thanked those who sacrificed so much so "a man whose father, less than 60 years ago, might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath" as mentioned by cnn.com. Obama was raised by his grandmother, who died just before he won the seat. He was the first black man to graduate for Harvard University and he was initially raised in a "white" single mother's home as his Kenyan dad died when he was very young. So he has set the beam for other kids in the same position as him, to show them if he can under his circumstances so can they!
Today thousands of people crowded the National Mall and surrounding area that encompasses the Capitol, White House and Lincoln Memorial. They sang, danced and waved flags as Obama's swearing-in approached. They bought badges, flags, signs, hats, T-shirts to mark this day. A day that will go down in history (or should l say already has). We must not also forget the thousands of people (including myself) from not only America but all over the world watching this spectacular live on television. What l liked was that Obama got out of his car not once but twice to walk and wave to the people that were there for hours waiting to see him in the freezing cold. Obama was wearing a classy navy suit and red tie, repeated the oath of office, his hand on the same Bible used in President Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration, how many people you know can say that!
As mentioned on cnn.com when Obama took the podium, the crowd grew quiet, hanging on his every word, where he acknowledged the challenges facing the country, "Know this, America -- they will be met." He promised to end petty squabbles on Capitol Hill, bring "old friends and former enemies" into the fold, and invoked the Bible, saying, "The time has come to set aside childish things." He also vowed to leave Iraq to its people, responsibly, and to finish forging "a hard-earned peace" in Afghanistan. To Muslims, he promised "a new way forward, based on mutual interest," and to terrorists, he leveled a threat: "You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."
After the address, hundreds of thousands remained on the National Mall as Obama went inside the Capitol and signed his first documents as the 44th president of the United States. So l guess we all have to wait and see what this new president brings, but l am sure he will lift the United States of America to new heights.
