Mackenzie Phillips goes for 18 month drug deferment program

Mackenzie Phillips best known for her roles in American Graffiti was arrested Aug. 27 for drug possession at Los Angeles International Airport. She was found "carrying what appeared to be heroin and cocaine in baggies and balloons," airport police said. Mackenzie is feeling very bad about the entire matter and pleaded guilty to one count in a Los Angeles court Friday, and ready to go for an 18-month drug deferment program.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank [law enforcement] for stopping me, and probably saving my life," Phillips said to Judge Keith L. Schwartz. In case Phillips successfully completes her drug treatment, the entire case will be dismissed. The actress is enrolled in a live-in treatment center in Louisiana. "You're making tremendous progress [in rehab] and I'm proud of you," Judge Schwartz told Phillips. "This is a lifelong battle you're in."

The 48-year-old former TV star has long struggled with drug addiction and tried to get rid of this by visiting rehab. During One Day at a Time's 1979-80 season, she was collared for cocaine possession. She was also fired because of her worse behavior. Hope this time she recovers completely and becomes strong to come out of this vicious circle of drugs.
