Britney rejects plea deal in traffic case

Pop star Britney Spears will be heading to trial next week to face charges of misdemeanor driving without a license. An attorney for Britney Spears has rejected a plea offer that would have placed her on a year's probation and forced her to pay a $150 fine in her misdemeanor driver's license case. He says if the case does go to trial as scheduled later this month, he will appeal any conviction. An appeals court on Tuesday rejected Spears's efforts to dismiss the misdemeanor charge and put the case put on hold. Her trial is set for Oct. 15 in Van Nuys.

Lawyer J. Michael Flanagan said during a Los Angeles court hearing that Britney Spears, 26, was being unfairly targeted because she's a celebrity and doesn't deserve even a minor criminal conviction on her record.The charge erupted from a minor accident involving Spears last summer August 2007, during which the pop star struck a parked car and drove off. Initially, Spears was also slapped with a hit-and-run charge that was later dismissed after she paid to have the other vehicle repaired.
