Following Billie Joe Armstrong’s very public meltdown at this year’s IHeartRadio Music Festival, the punk group has announced that is has cancelled the rest of its 2012 club tour and is pushing back the start date of their arena tour to February 2013.
Bassist Mike Dirnt says that their frontman’s “well being in [their] main concern,” as he has gone into treatment for substance abuse problems. According to a statement released last week, the singer and guitarist is reportedly doing well in his attempts at rehabilitation.
At the MGM Grand in Las Vegas at the IHeartRadio Music Festival, the singer went on a tirade onstage, trashing Justin Bieber and his guitar in an expletive-laden and impassioned rant. Cutting off a song short, he pointed to a sign saying that the band had only one minute left to perform and freaked out.
“You’ve got to be [expletive] kidding me! I’m not Justin Bieber you [expletives]! Let me show you what one minute looks like!” he shouted, and then began smashing his guitar onstage.
Since then the band has issued a statement clarifying that the Festival did not actually cut their set short, and that they apologize to anyone they offended.
In an attempt to reconcile their fans to missed and rescheduled concert dates, the band has decided to release the third in a trilogy of albums, Tre, ahead of time.
"We feel bad we have to delay our tour, so to make up for it we want to give our fans the music earlier than we had planned," drummer Tre Cool said. "If we couldn't be there to play it for you live, the least we could do was give you the next best thing."
Wishing Armstrong a speedy recovery!
