Three hours of corny escapism, dizzying song and dance, emotion-jarring mood shifts and inexplicable scenery changes – that’s real entertainment – Indian style!
The producers know that their main audience is people with low incomes, people who have to struggle all their lives just to put a little food on the table. What better way to escape grim reality than to get lost in a film that’s packed with three hours of drama, laughter, tears, romance, action and song and dance.
What’s a typical plot? Well, girl from rich family somehow loses her identity, which won’t be revealed until the end of the film. In the meantime the scenes will change and one hundred and eighty minutes of cinema time will fly by in dazzling choreography and mesmerizing song. The audience wants every emotion and are prepared to wipe away tears of joy and sadness, knowing full well there’s bound to be a happy ending.
Very few Indian movies rely on reality and there’s no reason why they should. The male and female leads might be singing and shaking outside the Taj Mahal one minute and popping up in Switzerland or Hawaii in the next – no explanation necessary!
This type of film is churned out conveyor-belt style to meet the demand. And apart from the Indian market these films are popular in many countries the world over because of their universal themes, and, although realism may take a back seat, they always have plenty of intense tragedy, good music, and spectacular dancing. And they make tremendous profits.
Top stars make more money than they could spend in a lifetime even while their adoring fans battle to make ends meet. And the stars’ influence reaches unimaginable levels.
Of course, India has produced numerous art films which have been well-acclaimed, but the fact is that for sheer entertainment value nothing can beat your standard sad, funny, music-jammed and wonderfully choreographed Indian movie.
