It was Phelps' 10th career gold medal, breaking a tie with Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and two others for most golds. He is 4-for-4 so far, setting world records in each of his events.
Michael Phelps has become the greatest Olympic athlete ever after he won his fifth gold and 11th career gold at the Beijing Olympics. He touched in 1 minute, 52.03 seconds, breaking his old mark of 1:52.09 set at last year's world championships in Australia. The announcer at the National Aquatics Center declared, that makes him "arguably the greatest Olympian of all time." the comment brought a smile on Phelps's face.
Phelps said to PEOPLE, "I couldn't see anything for the last 100 [meters]," "It just kept getting worse and worse through the race." "It's everything I ever dreamed about," Phelps said of winning his second relay gold in Beijing. "On the podium, I kept tearing [up] at it. I'm almost at a loss for words .... It's the best thing having four American guys ... swim all well together."
