After Justin Bieber was announced as the winner of the Milestone Award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the crowd booed him! The Biebs looked a bit surprised (probably by the booing more so than winning the award) as he took the stage to accept.

During his acceptance speech, Bieber seemed to be addressing those folks who booed him directly, (and perhaps his other critics as well), when he said, “I really just want to say… It should really just be about the music. It should be about the craft… this is not a gimmick… I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously.”

Biebs beat out fellow finalists Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift for the Milestone Award. This year was the first year for the Award, which was presented by Chevrolet and decided based on millions of votes from fans.

Bieber is no stranger to being booed. He has previously encountered booing at one of his own concerts (that he arrived to hours late), at a New York Knicks basketball game, and at a Canadian Football Game.

Bieber is also no stranger to controversy. He has been in the news a lot recently for all sorts of drama, including getting caught smoking marijuana, walking around shirtless in an airport in Poland, and for a video showing him involved in an altercation with a member of the paparazzi in London in March of this year.

Back to the BMAs: In addition to the Milestone Award, Bieber also won awards for Male Artist of the Year and Social Artist of the Year. He was nominated for Artist of the Year, which he lost to Taylor Swift; as well as Pop Artist of the Year, which was won by One Direction. Bieber’s album, “Believe,” was nominated for Pop Album of the Year, but was beaten by Adele’s, “21.”

The Biebs performed his song “Take You” as well as the song “#thatPOWER” with will.i.am at the award ceremony, which took place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

All-in-all, 2 performances and 3 awards to bring home? Not a bad night for the 19-year-old, booing or no booing.

    angelina jolie preventive mastectomy

Angelina Jolie shocked the world this week with her op-ed article for The New York Times on Tuesday in which she revealed that she secretly had a preventive double mastectomy in February of this year.

The actress shared that her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, (who was also an actress), died of cancer at the age of 56, after fighting it for nearly 10 years. Fearing that she would also be diagnosed with the illness one day, Jolie decided to undergo genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. The basic cost of this type of genetic testing in the United States is over $3,000, and it is rarely covered by medical insurance.

Women who have a damaged or mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have a higher risk of developing certain cancers, including ovarian and breast cancer. Although only about 5-10% of breast cancer is caused specifically by these types of gene mutations, women who do have a BRCA1 defect have a 65% risk of developing breast cancer.

After genetic testing revealed that Angelina does have a BRCA1 gene defect, she decided to undergo the preventive double mastectomy, which reduces her risk of developing breast cancer by about 90%.

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” Jolie shared in The New York Times article. “I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity,” she wrote.

Angelina’s decision to undergo genetic testing and then the double mastectomy has sparked a great deal of debate on the topic. Breast surgeon and author, Dr. Susan Love commented about Jolie’s decision, “She is a special case, and you can completely understand why she did it… When you have to cut off normal body parts to prevent a disease, that’s really pretty barbaric when you think about it.”

What do you think? If you could afford to, would you get the genetic testing? And if you found out that you had a higher risk of breast cancer because of mutated genes, would you opt for a double mastectomy? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

    easy corn casserole

I’m a big fan of corn on the cob. I’m an even bigger fan of cornbread. This recipe combines the awesomeness of them both for a delicious corn pudding that’s perfect for the holidays... or any time you need an easy and delicious side dish.

    Ingredients
    • 1 can of whole kernel corn (12-16 oz)
    • 1 can of creamed corn (12-16 oz)
    • 1 container of sour cream (8 oz)
    • 1 package of cornbread mix (8.5 oz)
    • 1/2 cup of butter, melted
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • salt and pepper to taste

    Directions
    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    • Grease a 9 x 13 inch glass baking or casserole dish.
    • Drain the liquid from the can of whole kernel corn. Discard the liquid and put the corn kernels in a large bowl.
    • Add the creamed corn, sour cream, butter, eggs, salt and pepper to the bowl.
    • Gently fold the ingredients into one another until partially mixed.
    • Slowly add the cornbread mix to the corn mixture, stirring gently as you do so.
    • Once all of the cornbread mix has been added, stir until just combined.
    • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for approximately 1 hour or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out mostly clean.

    Tips and Substitutions
    • An 8 x 8 inch baking or casserole dish may also be used.
    • Baking may take up to an hour and a half. After the first hour, check every 5-10 minutes to avoid burning it.
    • Can also be made in the microwave. Add mixture to a microwave-safe dish and cook on full power for 15-18 minutes.

    caramel french toast

I love breakfast foods. I know a lot of people who skip breakfast or eat non-breakfast foods in the morning, (like sandwiches or fried rice), and those people make me a bit sad. I feel like they just haven’t found the right breakfast food yet. Or perhaps the breakfast foods they have had in the past were just unimaginative and bland.

My favorite breakfast recipe right now is for caramelized French toast. French toast on its own is pretty awesome in my opinion but this recipe takes it to an entirely new level. For the breakfast lovers out there, I’m sure you’re going to love this one. For those of you who just aren’t so keen on the morning meals, please give this a try.

    Ingredients
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1/8 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 4 slices of bread
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup boiling water

    Directions
    • Beat the milk, eggs, cinnamon, and salt together in a bowl with a diameter large enough to place your slices of bread into flat.
    • Set egg mixture aside.
    • Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
    • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan or skillet.
    • Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture and coat both sides of the bread.
    • Place the bread in the heated frying pan or skillet.
    • Dip each remaining slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
    • Place each slice of bread in the frying pan or skillet.
    • Fry the bread until both sides are light brown and the egg is cooked.
    • Remove the bread from the pan and set aside.
    • Add the brown sugar to the pan and stir until it is melted and slightly sticky.
    • Add the boiling water to the pan and stir until the brown sugar and water are combined.
    • Place each slice of French toast back into the pan.
    • Turn each slice of French toast to coast both sides, remove them from the pan and serve.

    Pro Tips and Substitutions
    • Raisin bread works great for this recipe.
    • Top with whipped cream, fresh fruit, or both once finished.
    • Right before you dip the French toast in the caramel sauce, try adding 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla to the sauce and mixing it well before adding the French toast.
    • This recipe is so yummy that it even tastes great cold!
